B&B Messabout & Tropical Storm Sandy

After watching the progress of Tropical Storm Sandy, we realize it is going to be much closer to our shores than we had hoped or anticipated based on earlier models. This storm is unseasonably late. Due to the expected conditions, which will probably include flooding and winds of 25-35 knots (or worse if it comes closer), we are loath to ask people to subject themselves to these conditions. Obviously it will preclude keeping so many boats at the dock , or even in the water, and could make driving conditions quite dangerous (especially if you are hauling a trailer). The majority of the boats that usually come to the messabout are pretty "local" and these folks will have to be making their own storm preparations at home.

In view of the prevailing conditions on Saturday, we are delaying the Messabout for one week. If you have made travel arrangements which can't be changed, we will be here to greet you, take you to the restaurant dinner on Friday as scheduled, and will provide a Saturday evening meal. Pending weather we will try to get you a chance visit to see some of the locally built boats of your (model) choice, and generally try to accomodate your needs and give you a good time - in spite of the weather.

We will be here next week to welcome you back on the original schedule, for those of you who can make it. Again if you can let us know if you'll make the "storm date" next week, Fri. Nov. 2nd - Sunday Nov. 4th we would appreciate a head count.

I want to see the up grades Rick has done to his Belhaven whether he brings her or not, I'll stop by his house, and stop by and see Peters 28. Unless Sandy turns and makes a direct hit on you I'll be there. Still hope to meet as many people as possible.

I think this is a good solution. I'll see you next week. I'll try to be there Friday night and stay 'til late Saturday afternoon (Have another commitment Sunday). I hope anyone who wants to check-out the CS-20 Mk2 can be there Saturday.

If anyone is coming this weekend during Sandy's visit, and wants to see my boat, you can make arrangements to come by if you give me a call (Graham and Carla have my number). The boat is inside my shop so rain and wind won't be a problem.

I have to teach this weekend, but I can get over there Nov 3. If Graham can have my mast section and I can see the Mk 2, it will be worth the drive.

I may be able to make it next weekend. I'm helping a colleague finish editing his massive Mathematics textbook on a very tight timeline before it goes to press, but if all goes well, I hope to be able to come up next Saturday and Sunday. If I can make it, I'll probably bring along my 3-year-old daughter if that's all right (?).

The expected arrival of hurricane Sandy left Skorpa a little lonely at the dock on Chapel Creek.

After Graham and Alan had finished work on Friday, which included storm preparation for Sandy, we had time for a short sail.

Graham had tweaked the EC22 design after his extensive experience on Southern Skimmer so he was keen to see how she would perform.

Graham is not quite as expressive as Alan but both had high praise for the boat. That meant a lot to me coming from two whose standards are so refined.

Many thanks to Graham,Carla,Beth,Randy and Bobbie for making us feel so welcome. Sally and I decided to leave early Saturday afternoon as Sandy moved a little closer. We hope the water does not rise too high and everyone has a wonderful time and better weather next weekend.

The weather looks great this week end. We are definitely on.

It is a pity that some peoples schedule won't work for this week end but it is a small sacrifice compared to what some folks have gone through with Sandy.

Indeed, Graham. My family & friends in NJ, NY, and New England have a huge mess to clean up. I am one local who will have to skip the messabout - my daughter will be in the first annual SUP race in New Bern. SUP = stand up paddleboard,

I keep going back and forth on whether to drive up because I've got so much work on my plate right now, but I'd really like to finally meet Graham and other builders. If I knew a lot of other people were going, that might be the nudge I need. I'll have to make a decision sometime tomorrow. Also, is it strange to bring a three-year-old? I have a little girl who really wants to come along if I go. We'd probably drive up either tomorrow or Saturday morning, camp for one night, then leave the next day.

You should go if at all possible. And from what I saw in the videos, your 3 yr old will be a huge hit. DO IT!! Wish I could.

I have no idea who or how many will be attending this weekend, since the get together was changed. But FWIW, its just a laid back hang out gathering and if there is even a couple of boats, you can pretty much sail all day as long as the elements allow it. Your three year old will be welcomed but its not any playgrounds around in which for her to play about, depending on what she is used to. You should really be mindfull that the dock is a bit high off the water and if I was in your shoes make sure she has a comfortable pfd at all times and maybe good bug spray if she has sensitive skin.

I'm coming up from Columbia SC with my dad & little brother. We're planning to stay in Oriental and arrive at B&B Saturday AM for the day. Looking forward to it.

To those attending the 2012 Messabout,

I'm from NH and can't make the Messabout for yet another year! So the only way I, and others like me, can enjoy the festivities is through pictures.

PLEASE post as many pics as possible! Our cold weather has already started up here and one of our survival techniques is to watch videos and look at pictures of boats and people enjoying boating in warmer climates knowing they can enjoy their boats year round while we have to endure subzero weather, icy roads, shoveling snow storm after snow storm...sorry I'm getting a little carried away! So please help those less fortunate and give the gift that will allow us to survive the long, cold, dark winter. Your generous contributions of pictures and/or vedios will be greatly appreciated!

Well a six hour ride with a three year old normally turns into a bit longer. But I made 18 hour trips with three under eight long ago playing license tag bingo or looking for farm animals and barns in the backyards to entertain them too. So are you bringing your bride, which has its pluses too. She can wear costumes and make funny faces you know for the trip. [insert wink and a grin]
