I think you did well. I personally would have thought it rude to just give him a NO! right off the bat. But he insisted and you delivered your informed opinion. Folks want thier own opinions to be confirmed not told in great detail why its a bad idea. I found your post very interesting on the level of boat design as a progression through time.

The last time I priced quickfair it was within $5.00 of a similar amount of S3 epoxy. Now comparing to the Bateau Marine epoxy its kind of pricy. at 1.5 gallon kit of quickfair is $136.00 and the epoxy $93.00.

I would tape up to but not over the gap and wait untill its 3d to fix it up. At that point you can cut some scrap to size and patch it. After the patch is in place tape over the patch.

Batteries belong in a battery box. Not exposed to the elements and certainly not stored with other items. Especially sails.

Don't pay too much attention to me I'm no expert, just cautious by nature.

I suppose that's my timid nature rearing its ugly head but it would seem a bad issue to misjudge.

Looks like a good plan to start with. Did we not have a similar request on the forum lately? I'd think at a minimum you would want a designer to look at the mast steps and partners and how they were attached to the hull to be sure that structurally the hull would support the additions. The move from stayed to unstayed being perhaps more troublesome than the rest.

So how does one take a sailboat down a lengthy narrow canal? Is it that this is a North - south channel and the prevailing wind just very likely produce managable reach?

maybe it was a different back stay. I don't recall. I think that's it. the current design doesn't have a back stay. It just uses swept back spreaders and no back stay.

The designer at Bateau has indicated that he would consider the boat for a crossing with a few modifications. Most importantly being a bridge deck to help minimize the possibility of water getting into the cabin. But also perhaps a full masthead rig rather than the fractional rig as designed.

A rope to the bow and secure the middle. We use a couple of cargo straps in the middle. the rope to the bow keeps the bow from getting blown off center. When I packed a canoe I always used two ropes one to each corner of my front bumper but with the lighter kayak that does not seem to be needed.

Add chicken wire to the panels for strength.

Are they solid or birdsmouth? If solid you can make a substantial savings there. You could also make one with a lighter wall if you already have birdsmouth mast and use a fiberglass sock over all to stiffen it up. You might talk to the folks at bateau.com regarding the scantilings for the mast.

I started with an interest in wooden ships. Sailing came out of that. I decided it would be cool to learn how to sail. So I needed a boat, now I'm building one. You read one hornblower novel and you're hooked for life.

They are both the same. One of them is holding the loop upside down and the other right side up. In one the loop has the crossing rope on top of the and the other has the crossing rope under. I was taught to tie the knot like the second fella. I've been told they won't come loose under tension.

If you are running XP you can try to go to a previous system restore point. That should fix the problem but won't remove it from your system. Then you can run a malware tool to remove it from your system. If you use system restore you will find that any program that you have installed between the time of the system restore point used and the present will no longer be installed. You will not lose any user created documents. Start Menu / Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Resore Select "Restore my computer to an earier time" click next. Click on the latest date before your problem started, click next. Read the information on system restore and click next to begin.

My brother told me long ago that folks that are buying thier first sailboat are mostly concerned with safety and stability. After they have had a sailboat for a while they are concerned about speed.

If you click on "SHOP" you will find the options that cost money all laid out. You can purchase options for one leg or the whole race. I think that groups and friends only give you the option to easilly see the race that matters. As in most racing its the race with the boat next to you that matters regardless of where the leader is situated.
