You have been hearing about it – now here is the low-

down on the B&B ’12 Mess-about:

What:

The annual Mess-About for B&B builders, owners and “wannabes”.

It’s an informal get -together to swap stories and boats – to show off your boat(s),

test a model you might want to build someday – or just get to try out various

boats for the pure fun of it.

We are not planning on a strict schedule, but do have a few fun things “planned”

1. We will lead a contingent to a local restaurant for a dutch-treat dinner

Friday night at Little Italy, our local Italian eatery. Order off their full menu

(we recommend the stromboli – it’s huge – you might want to split it). Or

just order wine or coffee. The atmosphere is totally informal, you can

wear your sailing duds – and we’ll eat picnic style at long tables – it’s a

real getting to know you event.

2. Saturday will be a meet and greet and mingle; sailing of course, and

maybe even a race if there is interest. Lunch will be on your own – so

bring what you want; or enjoy one of our local restaurants. Later Saturday

afternoon, early evening, Graham will be demonstrating the CNC machine

for those who are interested.

3. Saturday evening will be a hamburger and hot dog cook out at the water’s

edge courtesy of B&B We may have a few B&B “Presenters” to speak at

the dinner…. (unless, like last year we could not organize everyone in one

place!) And rounding it up with a “dark velvet” after-dinner sail for those

who were not completely sated during the day.

4. Sunday is more sailing and smoozing… And for those who wish there are

plenty of local churches that would love to have you visit. Call and ask for

information if you need it, or we can give you list when you are here.

5. ……..and for those who have no schedule carry on through Mon/Tues

whenever – you are welcome to say as long as you like……. And you are

welcome to arrive as early as you like – many make a whole week of it….

Where:

At our waterfront workshop site in Maribel, NC. (This is not our office location

in Vandemere) We have a great site for small boat sailing, including a launch

ramp with it’s on own launching dock, a 170’ dock and floating dinghy dock.

Your shallow draft boat will happily snuggle alongside the dock for storing and

camping in. We have over 4 acres worth of land to camp on (sorry no RV hook

ups – but see the camp grounds information). If the weather should turn, you

can pitch your tent inside of the workshop and stay high and dry

Note the shop/dock site is actually in the town of “Maribel” not Bayboro but it

is a RD address.

When:

Officially Friday, October 26h (AM) - Sunday, Oct 28st (PM) but feel free to

come early and stay long. We will be sure to accommodate your needs.

How Much:

Cost: Free for the messabout – you pay your own food and accommodations;

we provide the water, the dock, and the space and Saturday night’s cookout

(BYOB, we provide sodas).

If you would like to bring family or friends who are not totally into the sailing

scene; there are plenty of things to do and see in this area (you will need a car).

If you are interested in History – we are steeped in it; and have a great local

museum you can see exhibits on the way in or out of town. There are multiple

tourist sites in New Bern, including Tryon Palace the only royal palace in the

whole USA! Tryon also has wonderful gardens and we have anew Hisotry center

very close to the palace. A little further afield we have a wonderful NC Maritime

Museum and a great Aquarium, and ocean front beaches.

We need to get an approximate head count, so if you are planning on attending,

please let us know and about when you might arrive – ie. Friday or Saturday so

we can plan for restaurant reservations and Saturday cookout. Just an email or

a call (you can even leave a message)

Please let us know your name, boat type (or none) number in your party and your

day of arrival (particularly if you will be coming for dinner on Friday).

We look forward to meeting everyone – so many of you have become friends and

family, yet we have not yet had the chance to meet in person. And for you folks

in the west – if things here work out we will try to do a west coast mess-about.

Who knows how in many regions we might be able to get together and have

mess-abouts? wow!

Carla count me in! Looks like I'll make it, barring a family emergency. I have to drop a friend off at Virginia beach Thursday, then I'll head for Vandemere early Friday. Should be there by around noon.

Cant describe my excitement about boarding my old Belhaven and see the upgrades Rick has done to her.

Also I have never been sailing in a CS, would like to do that and take a ride in some Grahams power boats.

Tonight's update says some pretty nasty winds and rain, beginning sat morning, if the storm continues on the projected path. It could vear to the right and be just fine, depending on what happens to the system coming across the middle part of the country right now.

Winds could be 40-50 mph and the water will be high in the sounds and rivers. This along with lots of rain. Will the water be so high that the boat ramp will be unusable?

Actually if the storm stays out to sea over about 100 miles, the winds should be westerly and water not a big problem.

I have been watching it like a hawk and trying to decide what to do, it is just our luck to have a late season tropical storm. The marine forecast for Pamlico Sound on Saturday and Sunday is for north east winds 25 - 35 knots and rain likely. I would be happy to blow it off for a week but a lot of people have made plans and some are already on their way. Sally and Joe are already here with their EC22. please see new topic also....
