Don, for the tiller is it just held together by epoxy in the forward end and spacer or did you use bolts of some kind?

@Andy Woerner— I’ve always used only screws.  My previous boat, which js now 10 years old, was built the same way.  It is holding up well.

Well, my renovation project has been going forward, albeit slowly.  Life and naps have a way of encroaching on project time.  This past week, however, I passed a major 

milestone.  The framework for the seat tanks is now glued in.  The parts have been made for months.  The roadblock (besides Life and naps) was removing the old framework.  That stuff was the old B&B (I think) fiberglass framework.  That part was OK, but it was modified and did not provide an airtight seal.  There was no attempt on the part of the builder to provide this!  Plus, the ‘glass framework was attached using a bonding material, probably 5200.  I don’t use the stuff, so I’m not sure.  It was a lot like Polysulfide bedding compound, but stronger.  It took a lot of work to prepare these surfaces for epoxy!  Anyway,  all of that work is behind me.  Here are the last two tanks.  Onward!

I’m still plugging away on this boat.  In my last post you can see the grungy white latex paint that was slathered everywhere by the previous owner.  It also got slopped onto hardware!  Fortunately, it responds well to paint stripper.  It is slow-going, but I’m making progress.  I’d like to do the whole interior, but a) I’d like to go sailing, and b) my sweet wife has been using the phrase “still working on the boat” a lot lately.  So, some of the interior stripping and painting will have to wait until this fall.  Gotta go sailing, and gotta keep my bride happy (not necessarily in that order).  So, if you’re coming to the Michigan Messabout, you’ll see a two tone interor.

Two tone?  Park it right next to the Core Sound that weirdly has varnished topsides, a painted deck, and varnished interior.  You'll fit right in, buddy!

In all reality, between the blue and white striped sails and the multiple teenage boys in the boat I doubt anyone has time to look at the finish work!

I can see light at the end of the tunnel. I got the primer coat on.  This is the worst possible time of year to be doing this.  With the heat and humidity, I’m soaking through two tee shirts a day.  For several reasons, I’m saving the area from the forward thwart on forward for September/October.  I want to go sailing!  (And appease my patient wife.) Looks like it is going to happen soon.  Fingers crossed.

I finally got to a point where I can go sailing again!  The hatches are done, and most of the interior stripped and painted.  I’ll tackle the rest of the stripping and painting after the messabout.

 

The area from this thwart to the bulkhead remains unfinished.  This fall I’ll strip off the old latex paint and apply more Devthane 379.

I’m in the home stretch!  I watched some YouTube videos on how to be a contortionist (just kidding), and began the final phase of stripping and painting.  On Monday I get to apply primer!

 

This was the easy part. 

 

This area was a whole lot tougher.  The holes in Bulkhead One are for oar storage.  They have capped sleeves made of PVC pipe.

Wanted to follow up on this thread and say that Don’s old boat is enjoying life as Don 2’s new boat in Montana. I added a dodger to keep the family happy and we’ve all been having a lot of fun learning the boat and new rig. It’s been easy days so far and there is a lot to learn but very happy with the decision and with all the work Don put into fixing up the boat.

Excellent… and I think the open cockpit is a GREAT Core Sound model in which to take family or others sailing.

I build a Core Sound 15 and comfortably had six adults. (I bought a Core Sound 17 with cabin… my family enjoys both, and my wife prefers the open 15’ version.

@Don Ulrich— The dodger is a nice addition, especially as a starting point for a cruising tent.  Love the smiling faces.  Is that an auxiliary power device in the port side oarlock?

I just realized that my last entry on the boat renovation showed a very shabby-looking area forward of the centerboard trunk.  @Don Ulrich did not receive the boat in this condition.  After I bought Southern express from Jay, I finished painting this area.  We then met in South Bend, Indiana for the handoff.
