We’re starting to think about the final look of the boat and the coaming seems like it can be a central accent element. What types of wood have you used and what dimensions? We’re thinking bright works would look nice… maybe sapele, walnut, or cedar. Suggestions and photos appreciated.

Don, for the tiller is it just held together by epoxy in the forward end and spacer or did you use bolts of some kind?

We’re just getting started on a CS17 and relatively new to woodworking. What’s the best method for getting those nice rounded edges on the tiller? Table router, router, hand sanding? Thanks, Andy and Grayer

We're total newbs and we're trying to make sure we're not missing details in the instructions. Early in this thread (about 5 years ago) Graham and Alan both say that the kit CNC rudder is meant to be glassed, but the current instructions say 'coat with epoxy, finish as desired'. Did the empirical testing shortly thereafter revise that guidance? Or is the proper process still to wrap them in fiberglass, similar to the center board instructions in the CS15 build video? Thanks.

Our 17 year old son came to us and asked if he could build a small sailboat and we've just taken deliver of the CS17 kit. Next is to buy some lumber, starting with the cockpit stringers. We're heading to Capitol City Lumber in Raleigh, NC, hoping to find some clear, vertical grain douglas fir... but being new to this kind of wood working, I have to admit, I don't know a good piece of wood from a bad one. Anyone have pictures of imperfect but acceptable fir for this task? Thanks in advance.
