Okay, I don't want you all to think my lovely wife is an oger. I built a Curlew, really enjoyed the build, but I've only had it in the water once. Hurt my back so bad, I had to be lifted out of it. I have an unfinished little 12' sail boat in my garage that I started 9 years ago. I hate sanding epoxy.... I loved building the Curlew, I love building and she grumbles a little, but I do it anyway. I've built all kinds of things, probably nothing really useful but I have a wide range of woodworking interesting. I built a hand crank organ, who need that!!? Currently building a couple koleidoscopes. Her problem is why do I need to build another boat, I have 2 already, well one and a half.

Coming together very nicely. Darn, I want to build one of these! How can I get my wife to understand????

Very nice job, and she looks very happy. I'd love to find an excuse to build another one. I just don't have any friends that are interested. My wife won't get in one.

Looks like you did a great job on that kayak. The finish give it kind of a weathered hide look to me, I like it.

That's a beauty. Do you ever attend the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival? I've been wanting to go to that for years and have never made it. I did got to the kayak festival one year, it was great. I would like to go back to it sometime, but I live on the other side of the state.

The size/length of the stringer will give no problem bending it into place.

What ever works is good. I used a soldering gun with a homemade blade on it made out of 14 or 12 gauge copper wire. It worked great also.

Just a suggestion, based on my experience. When I needed Baltic Birch, I assumed I couldn't get it locally, I live in a relativity small (population wise) area. So I traveled 300 miles, round trip to get some. Next time I needed some I thought what the heck I'll check locally first. First I tried a unfinished furniture place, yep they carried it, tried a couple lumber yards and yep they had it or could get it for me. All within 20 miles from where I live, and all within a couple dollars a sheet of where I traveled all that way to buy it. It is or may be worth sitting down with a phone book and "letting the fingers do the walking".

I backed into the garage with my canopy door up. Didn't do it any good.

That is looking great. I really want to build one of those, but then I really want to build almost everything I see.

Sorry, I can't answer the questions you have posted, but I can say, that is going to be a beautiful canoe. I love the look of that one and you are doing it up proud. I really would like to build one, just haven't figured how to break it to my wife yet! She never understood why I wanted to build the kayak.

Kody, welcome to the forum. I have very little experience, having built only 1 kayak, so I will not answer the questions. There is a lot of knowledge here, so you question will be answered. Just wanted to pipe up an welcome you.

Would it be okay to make the plot holes as described, prebend, drill/counter sink the first hole at the top of the strip. Mount it, hold the strip in place and then drill the finish size hole in the strip and the piece of wood it is being screwed, to then counter sink, then use the screws. You need to drill a pilot hole into the wood anyway. I put a little sealant into each hole as I went also.

Ahhh, Jeff you and snopes spoil my excitement. I should have checked snopes first. This would had been on National News had it been true. One thing I have wondered though, who "snopes" Snopes??

The photo was taken at the entrance to Katlian Bay at the end of the road in Sitka, Alaska. The whale is coming up to scoop up a mouthful of herring......... (the small fish seen at the surface around the kayak). The kayaker is a local Sitka Dentist. He apparently didnt sustain any injuries from the terrifying experience. The whale was just around the corner from the ferry terminal, and all the kayaker could think at that moment in time was: "Paddle Man - really fast!" The whale's mouth is fully open with the bottom half under the boat. If the whale had closed his mouth before he furiously paddled away - He might have been LUNCH!!! Look at the picture again - He is in the whale’s MOUTH
