Ha, DJ, don't put too much stock in my input. I have only built one kayak. I'm far from an exert, hang here because I love the kayaks and there are real nice experts here to talk to.

Alway a good thing when students are given some practical applications for what they are learning. Hats off to you and the teacher. Something I'm sure will stick in the mind of the students. The coarse I hated most in school was geomerty. The one I think I probably use most in woodworking is geomerty. Wish I had paid more attention and probably would have if I had seem practical application.

Yes great place, I've built my kayak and am admitting to myself I probably won't get the chance to build another, but I still hang out here for all the reasons stated above. So Thank you!

One thing that will help, but is tedious, time consuming and not always easy, is cut along the patteren with a sharp knife, before cutting it with the saw.

I need something like that in my shop, just to write notes to remind me what I was doing 10 minutes ago!

I'm thinking one drawback to a SOF is sellability. You read the same concerns over and over on here from people just starting about durability, leaking, getting punctured, etc. You go to sell one and you would have to convince potential buyers these are not concerns. On the other hand, compared to a strip built you could sell one a lot cheaper.

The other advantages to the skin boat in my opinion, (keep in mind I haven't built a stripper,,, yet), is the short time the SOF can be in as opposed to a stripper and much less mess.

I had no problem with the Frog tape when I used it with the oil based paint. I did do it a couple days after I had painted the two primary colors on the boat so the paint had plenty of time to dry. I decided to put an "accent" strip between the two colors because of the bleed where the two colors meant (I had used painters tape between the two colors). I put the red line in shown in the picture. It did a great job IMHO. It is just an alternative to try.

Well, both are nice looking canoes, but I agree, in the beauty category it is hard to beat a strip built. They are art work in my opinion.

Stitch and glue make for some beautiful kayaks, but I hate sanding fiberglass and epoxy so much I opted for the SOF. I have a little sail boat I started over 8 years ago and have it 2/3's done but I gave out on the sanding. What a mess. Maybe some day I will get back to it. Get your wife to help on the sanding, she will appreciate the kayak more.

That is a great looking kayak and a very happy looking kid.

I used the original 8 oz. and I have a few minor wrinkles. Nothing that worries me.

I don't remember reading where anyone painted the interior. I don't even know how you would go about it. I know I didn't on mine.

Jeff talks about the tape he liked to tape off his boat, I thought I would suggest you try the "Frog" tape. The one I used was green color, I see they now make a yellow color that I believe is more sticky. After you lay the tape down, you run a damp cloth over it and it seals along the edge so pain can't bleed under the tape.
