Hi!

Really nice build!

About the material qualitites of stainless steel...you got the right stuff; AISI316L is acidproof stainless steel which is regarded as the best "normal" SS.

The best resistance against rust is the 316L followed by 316 then the 304L and the 304 being the least strong against rust.

I'm working with design of sewage treatment plants, and we use quite alot of SS in our plants. When embedding SS-stuff in concrete we always use 316L.

Nice "Fuel Locker". If my eyes do not deceive me it looks a perfect size for a six pack. No need for elaborate Coast Guard venting requirements there -just do the lid right.PeterP

The fuel locker is going to be more of a "wet" locker.  There won't be a hatch in the bench top for it.  The door will be just a big opening into the cockpit.  The locker will be just big enough for a one (maybe two) gallon gas can, my stove fuel and maybe a couple of fenders.  I'm just very paranoid about putting fuel cans in enclosed lockers and this way I won't have to constantly trip over a can in the cockpit.

The ice boxes are pretty tiny.  The bottom has about three inches of ridgid foam, the sides will have two and the top will have three.  On trips, my usual practice is to keep a small cooler in the cockpit and just feed it with ice from a bigger box.  So, I'll probably just freeze water bottles, store them in the built-in boxes and pull them out when needed.  With some luck, they'll stay frozen/cold/cool for three or four days.  I'm building a drain into the boxes, so if I wanted, I could even dump crushed ice into them for day outings (but my toes will get cold from the icy run off).  For the lids, I have a pair of 8" deck plates that will provide access to them.  I'll remove the plate, then pull out a round "plug" of glassed insulation to reach inside.  Hopefully there won't be too much cooling loss through the door.

I've been spending lots of time coating the interior and building compartments. In both benches will be small ice boxes. And, I'll have a dedicated fuel locker abaft.

Hope I'm not speaking out of turn here or that you've already completed the work ;) ---

If it were me and it's not, I wouldn't glass in foam in compartments.

My experience is that that is a surefire road to getting rot sooner or later.

I'd make up separate glassed foam blocks so they interlock and can be removed to dry/air out those compartments - as well as adding a water drain hole into the bilge to keep melted ice water from accumulating.

Sorry,

I thought about that, Tom, and went back and forth a few times.  Actually, I have several compartments that are either fully sealed or quite small and hard to peek into.  So, thorough inspections will always be somewhat of an issue.  If the foamed box becomes problematic (or foam won't stay dry), I'd probably need to just pull the foam out and scrap the idea.  I also need to be very consistent in keeping the coolers' lids open when the boat is in the garage.

I can't stop now.  I've already told the world that this boat will be at a sailing event on May 1.  So, I have about 60 days to "put up" or "shut up".  If I can stay productive, I should be able to make it.  Hopefully, my sails will arrive by then.

Also, I'm now out of plywood.  I only have cut-offs left and still need to build a centerboard trunk and foredeck.  So, you other Lapwing builders, twelve sheets is not enough.  Plan for fourteen to make it safe.

Holy Cow. There are lots of little pieces in those hatches. I had to study the plans for a long time to figure them out.  But, if I build them correctly, they will be more watertight than any factory plastic hatch.
