  1. I currently use a 8amp and 10amp lithium battery chargers for USB from Amazon. Both can charge with 1amp or 2amps, USB only. They also have built in solar panels, though it would take week to fully charge. The most I paid was $19 on Amazon.com with free shipping. I noticed new VHF's have USB chargers, and I use a waterproof standalone (USB charge) Bluetooth speakers for music underway. These two batteries and a 15watt solar panel have provided all the juice I've needed. The only time I started worrying on a 3 day trip was with my son constantly charging his phone (2.4 amp battery) due to heavily using. The solar panel keeps up with one device on active charging just fine, but when all your doing is charging all day, it never has extra for batteries. So I would charge my waterproof Nexus 6 at night (3.4 amp battery), and hope I didn't run out of backup juice before the weekend was up. For water proofing, in extreme weather the waterproof clear bags from a Kayak store worked just fine.. On the downside due to the type of lithium used for the batteries, I would NEVER want to get them wet. My next battery will be the 18amp for USB charging that is $36 on amazon.
  2. Electric Paddle Drive 2hp Review - Try it! The Electric Paddle Drive 2hp (EPD2) outboard is a power head mounted direct current motor, that can provide 34 pounds of thrust at 245 watts an hour for 2 hours and will be comparible in price to a 2.5hp gas outboard. I had a chance to try the EPD2 outboard at the NW Wooden Boatshow on my Core Sound 17. The boat weights about 390 lbs, and we had three large adults in the boat averaging about 600 pounds. Overall the boat weight was right around 1000lbs. Average speed was 3.5knots with bursts to 4knots. At first glance the outboard is small and brings back memories of my 1957 Elgin for size. The battery back is in a seperate mountable bag, which with extender cords Electric Paddle can provide, could sit anywhere in the boat. The prop is similiar to an RC prop, and large mazimizing the efficiency of electric low speed, while not trying to copy a conventional outboard drive prop like some electric outboards do. It was super light, and the only touchy part was mounting the $20k prototype with out dropping it. Peukert Law Ragone plot Details from Electric Paddle: Motor: Power input- 250-300 watts- exact value tbd Motor operates on 24 volts with an option for 36 volts Power is variable digitally as the knob is turned in so many steps it's considered continuous 24 volt input peak efficiency 50%- electrical watts in/ thrust x speed in watts out. So far, a 7.5 ft Eastport pram goes 3.5 knots. 9 ft Minto 4k, 14 ft day sailor 4.3k, a pigmy osprey is 5.2 all in knots. Battery is a 24 volt unit from k2 energy. Any 24 v system is acceptable, from direct solar to lead acid etc. k2 specs are available at their store: http://store.peakbattery.com/k224vlfpba.html Together, the system gives 45+ minutes of runtime at full speed and extending the range with lithium is much less expensive than torqeedo. More specs and features will come out as the design settles in the next few months.

  4. I use my anchor roller for running the line, then tie around the main mast as well. It's worked wonderfully!!! The clothes line was a little harder, and I wished I had real cleats aft on my boat. What I've done for temporary cleats is used pins in rowing positions, or ran line through pin holes, to create loops for a more secure solution.
  5. Finished the rub rails. The boat looked great at Port Townsend Wooden boat show. Thanks for all the advice on the rub-rails. Ed
  6. If anyone is coming by the Wooden Boat Festival, my Core Sound 17 with newly finished rub rails is on the inside dock closest to NW Maritime center Building. If anyone needs a place to sleep, Saturday night is open on my CS17, and tomorrow night I have it rented out. I'll be between that, R2aK tent, and Gaylynn the Gig harbor Boatshops newly relaunched 1947 harbor launch converted to electric. Call me 912-322-2661 and someone (whatever volunteer I have covering that shift) will take you out on a harbor tour in the electric boat for free.
  7. My keel batten has been sanded down for the part aft of the trunk, and I'm laying several layers of glass on top... To much wear on that area, and worried the board would rot. For the keel, the small part that had damage due to being pulled on a tow truck, and even after repairs got wet. This was cut out, and a new piece of wood was carefully scarfed in glassed, with half round SS on top of that. Other then that the keel batten and keel in my CS are holding up amazingly. There is a CS20 in Denver with a cat ketch, lug rig. I noticed he really had to upgrade the masts to make it work.
  8. Do you have any big box caulks you recommend for rubrails?
  9. How about adding a second centerboard on other side? Gives options for sailing, or an emergency back up.
  10. I used this new stuff from home depot.. Good reviews, but man it is nasty to work with and clean up.
  11. Is it worth putting stain on rails? Right now they are tight grain for. Was thinking about mahogany to match tiller and thwart.
  12. What do you radius do u guys route for bottom and top edges of rub rail? Is hand sanding it better?
  13. How far up do you guys think I should run my new rubrails? I have an extra 12 inches to play with on each. My previous ones where 1/8" down from deck, I'm thinking these should be 1/16 to flush. Thoughts? The only thing in way slightly is anchor roller that I need to avoid.
  14. I cut sapele bungs for a good look. For counter sinking I have tapered countersink bits. On the screws I dip them in toilet bowl wax to ease going in, and protect inside of the wood from corrosion/rot/rust poisoning.
  15. Look at this one: https://vimeo.com/133833096
  16. I'm getting ready to install my new rubrails on my CS17. 3/4" thick fir.. Should I use 1 1/4" flathead screws, or 1 1/2"? Inwale is 3/4", and 1/4" of plywood on each side... I'm just worried that with the bungs 1 1/2" will be close to going through. Oh preferences on square drive versus Phillips?
  17. Scott, I found anchor rollers on Ebay and Amazon that are the right size for a CS17.. I bought mine on Amazon, and it beat making a template.
  18. Three Graham Brynes designed boats showed up to the Pocket Yacht Palooza and Palooza Crooza in Port Townsend last weekend. http://www.pocketyachters.com/Port_Townsend_Pocket_Yachters/Pocket_Yacht_Palooza.html Core Sound 17 (my boat) Belhaven 19 (Randy's boat) Core Sound 20 (Danny's boat, he's the brand new proud owner who traveled from Oregon. For the first day I used Randy's clothesline anchor, and then slept on the boat overnight in front of the Maritime center. The event was fun, and got to catch up on things with some of the R2AK guys, including listening to a talk by Roger Mann, and then a presentation by John Welsford on boat design and the scamp going around the horn. The next day Jenn was dropped off, and her and I traveled with the group for 5 miles until the overnight anchorage, and then kept on going an additional 10 miles to Port Gamble and pulled out at the Hood Canal Bridge. I found a weird photo on my phone after the trip my wife took of me sound asleep while she sailed the boat.. I remember letting her sail and enjoying the ride, just not falling asleep. My boat will be at the Wooden Boat Festival in September, I hope some other B&B boat owners show up with boats! For those finishing there boats, bring the partly finished boat and work on it at the show. Hope to see more of you guys at future events, this one was a lot of fun! For those building your boats in the Seattle Area Randy has a Belhaven trailer for sale.
  19. Small craft advisor's classifieds aren't working anymore, so that leaves craigslist, or local small boat groups.
  20. I've listed my CS17 for sale on http://www.pocketyachters.com/Port_Townsend_Pocket_Yachters/Boats_For_Sale.html It's time to move up on boat size to a CS20 MK3, as my family is out growing the boat. All 4 kids all the time want to go camping on her, and it's getting tight.
  21. How about weather boards / companionway hatch size that allows the boards to double as bunk boards? This also gives you potentially more storage for bulky things like sails, dry suits, survival suits underneath, without stepping on them.
  22. What are the shackles rated, where did you get them, and what type of line? I've used yellow straps, with bunkboard rollers bolted into overhead, but your way looks more portable.
  23. When you ordered the pumps, did you request a spacer? If not you can create one your self very simply by splitting a small piece of flex tubing down the side to fit around. If you don't have any available measure halfway up for what a normal stroke is, and put a piece of duck tape around to remind you of where to stop. If you want to be fancy put line around, and then ducktape to make a fixed stopper. I just cheat now and weigh most of my epoxy batches. Usually it's not large amounts, and my wife has an awesome kitchen scale that weighs' in grams. I have almost no waste now on epoxy.
  24. I really like the rolls of 3M sticky sandpaper to put on the foam backed hand sanders.. For rotary at the boatshop I've found the the multi red stuff with small homes from home depot on some materials seems to clog the holes easily. So if using rotary I usually try to match amount of holes. Lowes has a Gorilla sandpaper that is amazing, and they have a pack of 50 that is very affordable when you consider the price for a pack of 4.
  25. Doug, Can you please post photos of how you are anchoring the boat, and closeups of the anchor line, and talk about how easy it is to rig, and how the boat feels at anchor? Also, do you have any photos of some of the stuff like kitchenette (sink, etc), or how you mounted the stove?
