1. This plan package is pretty impressive! I was so impressed that all the regular sized sheets are now in page protectors in a notebook. Not quite sure how to keep the blueprints safe from damage... Do no want to fold them up and get a crease down the middle.

Included is: Privacy Police Owners Cert (hull number/copyright) General Construction Guide Sales Receipt CS17 Materials List CS17 Hardware List Materials Source Directory (2 copies one tan and one hot pink, not sure about difference) B&B Price List for materials obtained from them So far it's 29 pages of stuff. Count it, that right 17 sheets of high quality plans with excellent description on each.. Two where repeated and only had different dates and small difference on a hatch on the left side I think. Can anyone explain the differences better? 2. Just received my CS17 plans in the mail today with hull number 260. The only issues so far is a missing CD which is being sent and a couple of plans I'm not sure about that look like duplicates but have different dates, more about this later. I contacted Qualityplywoodspec.com with whom a friend has an account and the prices for Okoume 1088 are 39.35 1/4" & 60.00 3/8 sheet. They seem to have good prices... You need to setup a wholesale account with a business license to go this route, taxes and the whole nine yards. Oh wait I already have a business set up with all the paperwork. I am considering Hydrocore Marine Plywood 1088 for the bottom as we have nasty river sides out here with shells galore. Another prospective builder nearby here is looking at the CS20, so hopefully he will want to help with mine before he starts his! Later, Edward [tt]PS My previous thread on the boat was http://www.messing-about.com/forums/index.php?topic=6645.0[/tt]
3. Hey, just trying to make the process cheaper.... Lowes has a nice price on a joiner. I have to buy a table saw, belt sander, various hand saws and hand planers from Lowes. I also need to figure out how many clamps and what kind that I need. A few can be borrowed from my father.. Do I need pipe clamps? Before I forget what type of layout and measuring tools are recommended for transcribing the plans onto the wood?
4. Would using Biscuit Joints work well for the CS17 instead of scarfing? If you want to know what biscuit joints are here you go: http://www.woodzone.com/articles/biscuit/biscuit_joiner.htm Oh does anyone live near St Marys GA / Jax Fl. with a core sound? Later, Edward
5. Do any detailed sailing guides exist online for Cat Ketch's?? The only one I've found is the one at B&B Yachts. Google search never turns up anything... It seems that for anything except sloops, and hobie cats any other kinds of sailing rigs are on their own.
6. Spraying also costs more for proper protection and a good clean area to do it in...
7. On the Hobie Cat 16' I carried 4" pipes bungeed under my tramp.. Fully loaded with camping gear it made it nice for rolling out of the water....
8. This is my part time business www.cumberlandcanvas.com I do mostly repairs on sails, dodgers, etc.... Lately motor cycle seats and car upholstery. Recently we even restitched a jeep skin. We have a Singer U30-33 Industrial and a Zigzag heavy duty for sails etc. V,R Edward
9. I have emailed Graham and his ordering person but have not yet received a sail quote....
10. Updated Spreadsheet!! All I did was make a cheap/spec version for the CS17 based on used parts from Sailors Exchange or grab bags of hardware on Ebay. Three sheets. I included the 20 on the last sheet but did not update the prices to reflect.. Now if we can find some spread sheets with performance curves, etc for the Core Sounds... V/R Edward
11. These are the best prices for plywood I have found. I'm considering the Hydrocore for the bottom of the boat, we have lots of nasty shells on the river and beaches out here. Going to pick up the wood this weekend.... Anyone know of better prices? Everything I have is excellent quality. <-----------A Quality I could do: Package #1: Okoume 1088 3 sheets 3/8" $72.10 each 9 sheets of 1/4" $57 each Shipping $103 to a business $35 extra to a residence. Package #2 <----------------------B Quality Hydrocore Marine Plywood 1088 3 sheets of 3/8 $62.60 9 sheets of 1/4" $38.60 Shipping $103 to a business $35 extra to a residence. Let me know to proceed. 12. Ordered the plans and the companion CD today for a CS17... I could use some recommendation on a good book.. Which one is most applicable to the CS17.. I was thinking Devlin's book but wasn't sure. Also does anyone know of any detailed guides for sailing/handling/rigging on a cat ketch? I have googled but only found wikipedia and this site. V/R Edward PS Graham I used to be a computer tech professionally, HP printers are a good deal because of warranty and they will refurbish (better quality assurance then new printers), if requested..
13. I was worried about some of the cuts and joining methods..... The only saws I have access to are a table saw, jig saw, and a 7-1/4" Skilsaw... I do have a couple of hand saws and planned on using them for the finer cuts. On http://www.roguepaddler.com/cs20c.htm he did scarfing and I don't know if this is the easiest way to go.
14. Marine Hydrocore? Does anyone have any experience with this?? Would it be a good substitute for Okoume? Is there a way to minimize high quality finish plywood, and use more pine marine plywood?
15. I attached a Excel CS17 estimated cost list... Please let me know if I am missing anything or on the wrong track for a few of the parts.. Most of it's from research on the forum. Right now I'm looking at 3969.15 for building...
16. Has anyone started or thought about a wiki to combine a lot of the knowledge and tips being presented in this discussion in a easy to use online guide? Another thought would be to include pages of links by category: i.e. builders, blogs of owners, photos, etc. I have found that even searching this forum barely scratches the surface on information for these boats. Its one of the few custom built boats with such a support network.
17. http://jacksonville.craigslist.org/boa/1101070322.html Here's a trailer that might work... http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_1063_1063 This is actually a good deal since we have a brand new Northern Warehouse nearby... free shipping... But, not sure this trailer will work. Oh and after looking around at different prices for marine Okoume it is cheaper to order the kit from B&B.
18. I'd be happy to do a road trip sometime! I'm in St. Marys GA. but it would be a fun weekend trip with family. My last trip was to see a Hobie 16' in Florida with Hydroplanes...
19. http://www.clcboats.com/shop/products/boatgear/TRAI-SLDCK-250.html Would this trailer kit work for a CS17 or is something better available?
20. I have 3 kids... Four, Three, and One... Would a CS20 be a smarter build for the extra room and easier lines?
21. Felipe, I agree with you, sailing this thing in nasty water sounds scary... I sail a flying scot in Jax, FL up the river in some nasty wind and conditions but nothing like we get here in St. Marys GA right on the border with a coastal/tidal river where in our Cumberland Sound nasty waves build up with wind from almost any direction. I was terrified (so where the owners with experience), one day in a Hunter 22 with the beating and rolling we where taking... This included reefed main and keel down, but in 22 knots the waves and wind kept rolling us on the side. Does anyone have input if the CS17 handles better then this boat? I'm not sure the open cockpit flying scot is a boat that would work here either.
22. Reading the forums a lot of people talk about the C17 no being able to get close then 90 degrees to the wind. Is this talking about a beam reach? If so how can you go upwind in this especially against a current and wind. My Hobie 16 can get closer then this.... Any help to clarify this would be appreciated.
23. I'm a new builder with experience in canvas/sailmaking as well as owning several boats including a C&C 25 & Hobie 16. I have questions on: 1) Details on the homemade blocks and other hardware or where can I find this information? How easily can the more advanced rigging on a C20 be applied to a C17. With the sail wrapping around the mast will using slugs ruin that? 2) Can the whole boat be build out of marine Marine Douglas Plywood? 3) Would this boat be possible using a structural foam with each side coated with fiberglass? Similar to a www.f-boat.com (the F-22 building process) 4) Who designeds the sails (where I can find details). Did anyone use a www.sailrite.com kit? Does the info come with the plans. 5) I have read about a 3rd sail but cannot find anything in forums.. Does anyone have details? 5) Does information for spars, masts, locker detail, etc come with the plans? 6) Do the plans have trailer requirements. Basically being a new builder will the plans give me enough information to build this boat. Should I pick up any books to assist me with this? Last question, would buying the pre-cut kit help or is it more of an expense then help.
