Well...Step 1 has been initiated...I ordered a couple of 20 ft aluminum poles to make the mast and spars. I got one 2.125 OD 6063 .065 tube for the mast (with extra as there is a cutting fee...I'll cut my own ;D ) and one 1.5" OD for the spars. I'm gonna end up short by about 1 foot on each of the spars but I plan on plugging the ends so I'll extend to what I need with the plugs. This will give me replaceable attachment points for hardware as a Benny! The pair only cost $67 delivered...pretty good I think. Now is the time to buy the stuff as it is sure to go up. I will probably order more to keep for other projects. I got mine from here: http://www.globaltecheng.com/products.htm As I said before I already have a sail which is Dacron, 75 sf designed for Michalak's Woobo and Mayfly. I was going to use it on Guppy but that build is on hold indefinitely... due to lack of space and time. Steve EDITED to Add: Got an email asking me how I wanted it shipped and that I wasn't charged shipping...Oh well...At least I was able to tell them I didn't want it chopped into 7 ft sections to UPSed for $5 extra!

I'll do up some pics as I build it. Right now the water on the lawn is 18" deep and HARD!...so building will have to wait until the trees are budding. Steve

Thanks for popping in here...I have a couple of things... First, I'll probably change it to a Balanced Lug (mainly because I already have a Dacron sail) so the spars will end up somewhat shorter. I estimate that the balance wouldn't change too awful much and I can take care of some of it by raking the mast. Would you be requiring a royalty for the use of the plans seeing as I bought the book second hand through Amazon and don't know if any of the boats have been built from it? I was going to email you about it before I actually started building the boat but that's a couple of months from now. Steve

Don't kid yourself...most of the pictures are of other boats and are used as an example of how something might be done or look. I keep all of my sketches too, so what you see might have been done to answer a question or post in a forum anytime over the past 10 years or so. Keeping them gives me a library to draw from. The typing was time consuming but seeing as I did it at work during down time...I was getting paid to sit on my butt anyways so I used the time wisely

Here is a site showing the construction of a DD(DinkyDink)2...of my own humble design. It is a modified to use the maximum of 8' sheets of ply version of DinkyDink. Construction is not in Stitch and Glue but Chined ply but I asked to get the dimensions of the framing for alternate plans. Can the Daggerboard be used from the SkipJack on the Lake Scow (Similar to the Wing Dinghy's Daggerboard?)? Steve

Seeing as most folks don't appear to know the design...it is a pre-cursor to wing dinghy, 11 ft 8" long 45" hull beam and around 65" beam with the wings. Nothing too special but it looks fun and quick. Steve

I have been looking at "Sailboats you can Build" and I think I'll try my hand at a Lake Scow this Spring. Of course...I'll be doing a little modifying...I am going to add 2" of freeboard...making the sides out of 1x12s rather than 1x10s and adjusting things to suit. I am leary of the 8 1/2" of side that the plans call for and would rather pay the weight penalty for the extra 2" of freeboard. Has anyone else built one around here? Steve

dont ask for wood flour ask for thier disk or belt sanding dust from the collectors. you'll get a bit of microscopic grit from the sanding medium too but it can only strengthen things. Steve

Try duckworks...they should have something for you and they are reasonable.

Just a bit of clarification on some of the terms here...A sloop is a boat with a main sail and a jib...regardless of what shape the main sail is. You can have a Gaff sloop, a bermudan (or Jib headed) sloop, a gunter sloop, a sprit sloop or any other mainsail confiruration that permits the use of a single foresail. A Cutter has two foresails and the mast is generally stepped further aft than in a sloop but you still have the option of having various types of main sail. The use of a Spinnaker doesn't turn a Sloop into a Cutter tho. Now that the technicals are over...where in NE are you (I live is Soux City IA, just across the Misery from S. Sioux City NE) Steve

Guess I'm lucky...the folks I work with are mechanics and fabricators and McGyvorizers and the only comments are "Dad built a few" or Gramps used to have such and such that he built" or "I have..." Only the females tend to raise an eyebrow but not very high and not for very long. Mostly it is "How's the boat building comin' or what are you building now?" Steve

They call it barn curtain and it comes in widths up to 14+ ft. I think they said it is a 10x14 weave or something like that. Keep checking back for when they bring the site back up. Figures I'd post the link and the site would be down...how often does that happen ??? Steve
