  1. The rest of the pictures (I think) for now. Will get more soon
  2. Yeah...he already told me he was going to add an extension to the tiller handle. I really want to see it under sail. I had originally thought of a daggerboard but when I suggested it to him he told me he already was making a centerboard and had the case done to boot! Had me scrambling to work out the centers as he already had his sails that he got 2nd hand.
  3. Long time ago (9-10 years) when I was first playing with simple boat designs (still am I guess) I did up a small sailing/rowing skiff design in Carene50. All it was was a screen capture of the drawing and the offsets to the expanded hull panels. Last year Ron Nordberg emailed me informing me that he had taken a fancy to the lines and had started building it. Over the past 10-12 months we have corresponded and collaborated and ended up with the launch last month of the EMMA-J. Here are a few links...one to pictures and the others to the two part video of the launch. I am looking forward to the first sailing pics or video or both...hopefully soon. It is hitting spring there after all (listen up for the accent) and a full sailing season is in the offing. Here is the picture of the design: http://angelfire.com/ego/lewisboatworks/Images/Experimental/Elf.GIF Here is the Facebook gallery of Photos: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=299623&id=578355720&l=e91f174784 and here are the links to the videos: and
  4. Thanks... I like it too. If you trim down the bows tho you run into issues with the plywood wanting to do it's own thing. Besides...it's supposed to be a quasi Cat boat and they aren't really noted for their needle noses now are they? Wouldn't be right if he beat his old man's scow now would it?
  5. What is the "artificial sinew" and where would one go about finding it?
  6. Wellllll....I suppose I could use it myself...if it REALLY came down to it.

    Meow-ish

Today marks my son's 19th birthday... and today is the start of his own sailboat build (his B-day Present)...actually requested by him and designed by his Old Man. See...his girlfriend has a sailboat so he wants to learn how to sail and have a boat himself. (Gotta finish this before the inevitable GF change and the loss of interest). Below is the proposed design...kind of a quasi Cat boat but not quite as wide at 12 x 5 ft. I plan to fit it with 2 sail plans...a true cat gaff rig and a balanced lug. It can use the same sail but swap spars and mast positions. It will use a Daggerboard for now with the option of fitting a Centerboard later in a rebuild...we'll see. I hope to get it done for next year's Rend lake Messabout. Lots of the hardware will swap between my current build and his also so things will be redundant at the messabout in case anything breaks. This will include at least 1 new process for me... Scarfing the panels together. I have a 1:12 jig made up and we'll see if I can manage to not screw things up too bad. My LakeScow build runs apace with the interior all gooped up and getting ready to finish the deck bracing prior to flipping and finishing the bottom. I still hope to make my Sept 26 launch date although it might not have all the fixin's done. I'll need to get it out of the garage in order to build this one so I HAVE to get it done soon. I want his hull together before the snow flies.
  8. Bill Paxton built an open (no cabin) one...I suppose he is busy and hasn't checked in recently. What about the fellas from Down Under...I still watch the video when the snow flies...reminds me it won't last forever. Steve
  9. sureform blade stapled or nailed and clenched to a piece of 1/4" ply for a handle. Oh...I would love to have come up with that one.
  10. Before you head out look into hooking your phone to your laptop...gives you ease of typing with connectivity...unless of course you don't really WANT to be that connected ;D ;D Good luck, have fun and next time I offer to be cabin boy
  11. Today's update: Got the rudder blade made...going with the original for now and will make kick-up later. Sealed all the seams on the inside of the hull also. Now for the not so good news...got all the clamps off the mast and proudly extended it out in front of me...William Tell would be in heaven. The damn thing has a good 3/4 inch WONK to it :-[ . PLUS...the hole and the mast are 90 deg apart in orientation...so the WONK would be to the left or the right if left as is. This means I'll have to plane down the wider sides and then glue a thickener or use a wedge so the mast will fit the partner...or cut the partner larger and laminate a smaller, correctly shaped piece on top. I had already planned on trimming the hole so that last might be the way I'll go. No pics as I don't have time today. Steve
  12. Much done today. Started with Jamming mucho caffeine so I could stay up then I started as soon as I got off work. Mast rough cut and laminated together: Then I carved out one of the aft deck panels. (note: the book shows nesting them on one sheet but that gives one good side up and one crappy side up...I used two sheets of ply to get two good sides.): And a different angle: I took it off and traced it then matched them together: and finally...I couldn't resist seeing it with a sail so I stuck in the old rig from my ScoutCanu (the CE is too far back I know) Steve
  13. Betcha he's got a hitch on the front and just forgot to switch the boat around.
  14. Got some more work done this morning. It doesn't look like it but most things had to come apart and then get glued and screwed in. I know...there's a big gap between the DB and case. I did this on purpose so I could shift it around when using different sail rigs...for tuning the balance. I am going to have various plugs to fill the hole(s) depending on it's position in the case. There are 4 inches of movement to play with. I also made a shim for part of the upper DB case...this is to support the deck over the case area because there was a gap. My goof up, I wanted the case to go through the deck and get trimmed flush but I pooched it (again!)
  15. UPDATE! Got the DB case made, and the other bulkhead, cut out the deck panel and dryfitted things together. Started to work on the Dagger board too.
  16. Microsoft also has a malicious software detector/eliminator that is free...you could try that too... along with AVG Free for antivirus and malware. Steve

    What boat ?

Twin Leeboard, Cat Ketch rig I think, Scow hull not all that long... Look towards Dutch or Netherlands. Unless I am wrong and looking at the stern instead of the bow...then I haven't a clue. Funny how the front mast looks smaller than the after mast. More pictures if possible. Steve
  18. Thanks but I think he might have gotten things done already. That thread is a tad on the old side. I don't even have his email address anymore. Steve
  19. hello from the west coast of Iowa! I am in Sioux City. Bill Paxton has a Weekender (sans cabin) and is from the Minneapolis area. There is going to be a Messabout at Lake Pepin on the Saturday after next...if you can make it. Bill hosts it every 1st weekend in June. Info is here: http://lakepepinmessabout.com There are usually a bunch of people there from relatively near and a few from far. 1 who usually comes is from Cedar falls or Cedar rapids...forget which. Hope to see you there. Steve Lewis

  21. Amateur drunk...true. Hell of a boat builder...me thinks not. Well here is the latest installment> 1: Bottom of pic- piece to fill in the transom properly... 2: on the right- the big board is the daggerboard blank: 4 layers of 6mm 5ply plywood. Horizontal line is the bottom of the boat and vertical line is the maximum chord at 1/3. 3: Center top- the mast partner/center deck support/upper DB case support. 4: upper Left- one side of the DB case: 3/4" 13 ply plywood. 5: left middle- template for positioning the DB. 6: bottom with clamps- spacer because a 1x12 isn't and I need 12 1/4" for the crown of the after Bulkhead.
  22. I usuallly download mine...I missed the jeep one. What episode is it if you know. I think he take s most shots at the french and us...just my opinion.
