With my version I can sit on the cabin sole and have headroom, but not on the berths. I've got a forward hatch planned as well to make reefing something that can be done while standing IN the cabin. I'll have a few different positions for the floor board, so they can double up as berths, and a table as well. Trying to sort out the sheeting possibilities, and I'll be trailering her down to Maribel before the Messabout to finish up the rigging .

Doug.....any updates? I'm trying to get my house in order to start one of these mid winter. I want to try and see yours first, no matter what it takes.

I took her for her first time on the water yesterday.  There was almost no wind, but I was able to do about 1 kt in 1-2 kt winds.  She rows extremely well with the mizzen a little bit farther aft and sitting on the bridge deck.  I used 10 1/2 foot oars.  Winds are predicted to be 10-20 Monday, so maybe I will do better.  If so, I'll send pictures.  I plan to be at the messabout..

I am not sure if I can make the messabout. I just went to the MASCF and missed a bunch of work. I'm going to try to Priceline a flight as the time gets close as its a pretty long drive to B & B from NY. I suppose Raleigh would be the place to fly to, rent a car and come over. I just got my wife used to the idea I would build another boat, but I don't want to push it. I really feel like before I commit to a project this large I should see the one in person. I looked at a CS17 real hard a the MASCF and I saw a Brent's CS20 a few years ago, but they aren't real popular up here.

Pictures of the rubrail. There is now nonskid on the cabin roof, but I won't have the toerail finished by the Messabout. The inside of the cabin still needs to be sanded and painted.

Interlux Perfection on the bottom and lower sides (2 part polyurethane with volatile organics) and Brightsides above.

Doug,  how did you prepare the epoxy for the Brightside, did you use the Interlux Primekote?  I've done the bottom and topsides (finishing Amanda #50) with the primer and Perfection but the fumes are nasty, even with an organic charcoal vapor mask I ended up getting sick.  I've had good luck always with the Brightside but interested if you primed before that?

I primed with their Epoxy Primecoat (I find that sticking with one brand for one boat keeps compatibility minimal).  I have all the windows and doors open and an organic volatiles mask on.  Then I leave for the day.  Haven't you noticed the missing brain cells?

 

I'm thinking about doing the inside of the cabin with Brightsides and leaving the ceiling bright.  But, with winter coming, I'm hesitating about using the Primecoat in that confined space.

I painted my masts (second time around) with PrimeKote and Perfection and I would agree it smells nasty. My thought was there can't be anything that smells that bad that isn't durable. I had bought a 3M vapor mask (6300?) and honestly each day I painted I had no idea how much it smelled until I was done and took the mask off. After having avoided the smelly toxic paints on hull and mast first go around, I concluded the paint can't be as bad for you as all the sanding and extra coats with lesser paints.

The Interlux Primekote is a really nice primer that sands well.  I will stick with that on my cockpit/interior and finish off with the Brightside.  Have a safe trip to NC, look forward to seeing the pictures.

Just saw the videos from Doug's tests.

He built a beautiful boat that sails just as good and is self righting.

I guess the designer had something to do with it !

I have only one question if I may ask.

How would she behave (self righting) if she had her sails up ?

I'm only asking because I don't know (not much sailing experience)

Hi Greek builder,

 

We did not have enough water to be able to put the ballasted centerboard board down. I left the sails down to cancel out the loss of the board. It should be about the same.

 

After I finish my CS17 mk3 I intend to check it out in deep water to prove it.

 

You have some great sailing waters. I spent over a year in the Agean and Ionian.
