God Bless New Hampshire! (Of course our state motto is "Live Free or Die".)

For a boat under 21 feet there's no need to display the registration numbers.

And if you stay in  your right senses and do not adulterate your most excellent sailing craft CoreaSound with a stupid motor you generally in most states do not need to register the boat and have numbers.

That is one of the main reasons I don't have a motor.  Without a motor I do not need to pay taxes to use the boat.  I get to stick it to the man!

Really? I didn't realize there were states that don't require motor-less sailcraft to register. In Iowa, it was incredibly strict... even a kayak over 16' had to be registered, with 3" block registration numbers and the fee decal. In Georgia, paddlecraft get a pass, but you definitely have to register a sailcraft and display numbers according to the pamphlet the DNR gave me when I moved here.

IN Maine you can row paddle or sail to your hearts content for free.

Once you put a motor on it you have to pony up and Pay the MAN.

Here in my part of Australia you don't have to register a boat unless any motor is greater than 4 hp. You could have an engineless 70 ft sailing vessel with no need to register it.

In the wooden boat association I know of one boat being built- a narrow motor cruiser about 30+ft long- with 3 four horse 4 stroke outboards partly to avoid the need for registration.

You guys are over-regulated

North Carolina got me.  I built my daughters catamaran using metric scales since the original measures from Richard Woods (UK) were metric.  And I like metrics. Dang thing came out 14' 2 1/2 " Imperial measure, and this fine Red State that taxes and has fees for everything requires registration AND a title.

Sort of like my pickup truck - costs me $108/yr for a tag sticker because it has a towing capacity over 10K - little Dodge Dakota.

In RI you don't have to register a boat if it is motorless and under a certain length, I believe 20ish feet.  You don't pay sales or property tax on it regardless of size or whether it has an engine.  My Renegade (27 feet with an engine) costs me $100 every 2 years to keep registered.

Utah  All motor including electric and sailboats need to be registered.  It doesn't say anything about manually powered boats.

I wonder if float tubes with an electric trolling motor need to be registered?

In Connecticut, it's all boats over 19' 6",  or if it has a motor.  If you've got a 4 x 8 piece of foam insulation with a rubber band driven propeller, it's got to be registered, and you have to take a Safe Boater class to use it.

But a CS17 with no motor (a grudging nod to Ray here) don't need nuthin'.

The big problem with CT is that you pay sales tax as well when you register a boat for the first time.  I am not sure how you go about dealing with this when you build the boat.  If you docuement the taxes on the materials are you then exempt from being taxed again on the estimated value of the boat when you first register it?  CT even goes after sales tax for people who move there when they already own the boat and may have already paid sales tax some where else.  They also go after people who move their boat to CT (and hence are required to register it there) when they don't even live in the state and may have already payed sales tax some where else. These 2 scenarios have caused some serious controversy.  This has also hurt the marine industry as some people have chosen to keep their boats in NY or RI even if it means a longer drive.

I don't know about the whole CT Sales Tax thing.  I have a CT hull number, but I haven't bothered registering it because I don't a motor (yet?).  I know Ohio (at least) has a similar law.  You know, it's not the building or the sailing that confuse me- it's the registration wickets that are daunting.

Boats that are documented don't need to display registration either.  They do however have to display their name and hailing port.  I don't understand this logic at all.

My large sailboat is a documented vessel. I don't have to display the "AL" numbers on her, but I do have to display the (current) state registration sticker on the base of the mast. I was unaware of that requirement and got caught without a current sticker. That little deal cost me $165 for the fine and court costs.  :shocked!:  I won't let that happen again!

Be careful of all of those little rules. The state marine police don't have much of a sense of humor about that stuff.

I guess we really hijacked your thread, Wes.

Well, here's one last shot of the cockpit organizer after painting it to match the interior. Came out well, but a bit tricky to paint inside the box. I also finally painted the compass mount, anchor drawer, and berth panels I made this summer, all visible in the picture. Kind of a pain painting so many things at once, but it's nice to have all those projects officially finished. I also managed to touch up a few areas of the interior, including where I removed the CB bungee downhaul arrangement and filled the holes. Looks like a nice, clean interior again.

Hopefully, winds will be good for a sail tomorrow. I'm itching to go out and couldn't do it last week despite the nice weather because I wanted to let the paint dry for a week.
