Same here.  Way too much rain.  I quit trying to stay dry and sit here now soaked to the skin, taking a break from trying to clear gutters and trees.  My neighbor says it is supposed to change to a sprinkle in a couple of hours so we came in to warm up.  I would enjoy this rain w/o lightening if it were not for the leaks, flooding, erosion, etc.  I use to love walking through the woods along the creeks in weather like this.  Maybe I will do that again and to heck with working in it. ;D

My Spindrift is sitting sheltered in the garage/shop but no room to do any work on it.  I need to move some of the equipment to the shed, such as the planer and jointer as those are not going to be used.  When the rain stops I guess.

Konrad, you could find something small and just sit and sand. ;D

  Sweet looking boat!

I'd post some current project stuff but I'm still scratching my head over the boat tent.  I'm taking progress photos and I'll post them once I've either got a tent for my boat or give up and start over (either way I'll post the pictures).

I would post about kayaking or my latest trip but no one would care.

This forum is like no other. Its quiet because of the lowkey folks that slip in and read and calmly slip out simular to the same situation that you experience in your kayaking experiences. leaving no real trace to the average Joe, all while enjoying the experience.  How do I know this?? ;)  But rest assured, I read every single post in the evening time and a bit at lunch time if I have the time. This place is like a valium to me unlike a couple of other online ones.

Actually I am in the process of finishing another oddball project, a sawn in half long ways garvey hull for flats fishing and possibly a potential duckhunting boat if someone decides to do so, as its really setup simular to some of the online plans.

So bring yer kayaking stories, we want to know.

I'll trade you one kayak post for one canoe post.  You go first.

Yes! Please! More paddling stories!

My first boat was a (Anyone remember their adds in Popular Mechanics?) "Trail-Craft" frame and canvas canoe kit... That I actually built, FINISHED, and paddled as a kid somewhere around 1970. I paddled in the lakes and ponds of northern Illinois, and also in the mangrove forests of Florida when the folks let me bring it down here on vacation.

Years later, my wife and I were going through some tough times. We bought a fiberglass canoe, and as a kind of stress release, we paddled a local river here in Florida almost every weekend. If I had trouble falling asleep in those days, I would imagine myself on that river. Sitting perfectly motionless. With the paddle across my lap. The only movement being the occasional drip of water falling off the end of my blade, into the flat, dark water, as the slow moving current carried me down stream... Who needs sheep?

Later, we hung a Cruise & Carry outboard on it, and then an electric for a while, and started fishing the saltwater bays. Frequently being asked, "You're going out THERE... in THAT?"

Then we got a "real" boat... and caught less fish.

Then we got a little bit bigger boat... and don't even try to fish like we used too.

The people really catching the fish are the ones paddling kayaks.

That old high- mileage, oyster gouged, canoe was given, not long ago, to a co-worker who doesn't have much else to call his own, other than a fishing rod, due to drug and alcohol issues. I think his passion for the water and fishing is all that keeps him afloat sometimes.

Konrad, those pics are off the Glen-L site.

My first build was a frame and canvas kayak from an article in popular mechanix  or mechanix illustrated ......or one of those magazines.  Must've been in the late sixties.  I think i was around 10 years old.  Man, was I proud of that thing! 8).  My grandfather helped cutting out some of the pieces for me but made (lol...let) me put everything together.  And it floated!

Aw, Bruce and Larry, ya got me.

The thought of still water with the paddle across the lap has me thinking of birds singing and turtles eyeing me warily while I coast on by on a skinny river.  I remember a snapping turtle surfacing next to my fabric kayak and I swear to this day his head was as big as mine (and I was on the tiny little Eno River in NC).

The first boat I built was my own variation of the six-hour canoe after reading an article about it in some outdor magazine (I made mine with a dead flat flat bottom and couldn't turn to save my life) and the second was a skin-on-frame of my own design built in my living room one stir-crazy February.  That was the boat that I had the snapping turtle encounter in.  That boat saw lots of great fishing for about six years but was retired after a trip on the New River when the starboard side deck framing snapped.  It is currently resting comfortably and returning to the earth next to the porch.  I fully intend to record the lines before it's gone because I know how to modify the design to make the next one better.  I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Now I'm all misty eyed and should probably get to bed so I don't oversleep tomorrow  :D

That was child abuse!  Heaven forbid more parents/grandparents "make" kids do something constructive to create their own fun these days.

Hey, I have the plans for that Glen-L squirt.  Doesn't mean I'll actually ever build it, but it sure looks like fun ...

Yeah, I'll probably add it to my collection of plans. It's small enough that you could really trick it out without too much expense. I've been saving this chunk of figured Honduras Mahogany that would make a great dash... and check out the cool windshield struts in the one pictured. I wonder where he found them... The possibilities for fancy decking are endless...Is that wheel from a Sea Ray?...::)  ::)  ::)
