adla Posted March 22, 2004 Author Posted March 22, 2004 well...the plans have seen better days....i may be asking some questions regarding the measurements of certain things...but for now I press forward...I did a crazy thing and glassed the deck seam (under and over) ....and then thought...why didn't I just glue and stitch the boat??? It is HOT and dry here (as usual) and the deck just sucked up the epoxy ...I tried the glass tape in the cabin but went to the mat in the cockpit and on the seam of the deck...we didn't use tape or cloth much where I used to work since we fabricated and repaired mostly with chop or mat and made molds blah blah blah...feathered things out and built up....One thing that did come back to me was the effort level on rough work. I try real careful like not to overbuild and so my sanding is minimal....I plan to hit the deck with 40 0r 60 (must look and see what is left) and then quickly with 80 grit paper and apply the epoxy again in a thin coat...I'm not going to worry about hidden areas being sanded smooth...I worry about water intrusion and rot...pretty will come later. Now is the time to confess that I have only been on 3 boats in my entire life...a raft my cousin and i would row out in the middle of the lake to fish, a ski boat on a church outing and the Staton Island Ferry. what does make us tick...? i have always collected model sail boats.....have a few of them.... the dog is 150lbs....not good for a figure head...she has been reduced to deck hand (she was first mate) a. Barry Pyeatt Posted March 22, 2004 Posted March 22, 2004 Well now Adla, your progress is good. You just have to take the dogs actions in stride and feed her better. And maybe put the plans out of reach. I have to confess, I am puzzled about you using mat instead of tape or fabric. Mat is such a pain to try to do fine work on seams and finish joints. Don't worry about only having limited "raft" and Staten Island Ferry experience. Most of the builders of these boats havn't had much more than that, if that, either. They are building a dream, as you are. You will learn to handle it and sail it and you will have a wonderful experience for having built it yourself and gone thru all the challenges that accompany the project. The Weekender is an easy boat to sail. Far easier than most other boats its size and far easier than a lot of the ready made ones. Pretty is a relative thing. Capt. Jake has finished his Weekender about as nice as they come and is kind of a benchmark for Northwest builders to aspire to. But he still has to get it wet and learn to sail it just as you do. Others have some pretty rough and ragged boats that float and bring them an incredible amount of pleasure and satisfaction, and some of them have a 100 ft. finish on them. Inbetween the two extremes will be yours and mine. You are making great progress, and the time frame is your own. If you don't make it by a certain date, then don't worry about it. I've had to set work on mine aside for over a year due to some health issues. But I know it will get finished, hopefully this summer and be in the water sailing with Capt. Jake and others in this beautiful part of the world. So...if you need anything that is missing from the dogs lunch antics, just ask. Lots of us are ready to provide anything that got chewed up. Hey, that is what we are here for, besides the enjoyment of sharing with this great group of people. Frank is providing a wonderful place to help keep the dream alive for so many. Lots of great advice freely given and no one minds others opinions or experiences being shared and in conflict occasionally with our own. So get back to work and it will get done. Quote
Ed Jones Posted March 22, 2004 Posted March 22, 2004 Adla maybe if you tell us which pages are damaged some one with a set of Weekender plans will make a copy and replace the damaged pages for you. I don't think that the Stevenson's will mind sense it is obvious that you do have the plans but they are partly damaged. I would help but I am working on a PC. Good luck Ed Quote
adla Posted March 22, 2004 Author Posted March 22, 2004 My BYYC logo page is shot...and figures 9 and 15 are hard to read...other than that I have to say a friend of mine gathered the torn pieces and taped the thing back together.(lots of little pieces)...my page with the builder # is intact..I was builder #2742. The book looks real ragged taped and chewed, held together with a clip....more pirate like. If somebody has figures 9 and 15, I would really appreciate those pages and the BYYC logo page. it is all what ya know...the mat is more predictable for me and doesn't invite air bubbles like the tape did...either way it has to be sanded and finished...so I went with what I was used to... the dog is a co-dependant mastiff...i made her that way...and we are hardly ever apart and she is hardly ever outside...i really just ran to the store and she made lunch of the plans...she doesn't like competition for attention. a Quote

One you can get without even being on a boat. :mrgreen: I have had it since I was born. Just a thought here. If you have never sailed before let me recommend a book. Sailing the Annapolis Way. I bought a sailboat without ever having sailed anything other than a very small dinghy as a kid. Didn't have a clue about sailing. Bought this book and read it from cover to cover. Went out and tried what it suggested and it worked!! :mrgreen: Read some more and tried what I read next time out. All it all a great book on the basics of sailing. There are some things you have to learn the hard way. Like being aware of what the boat is doing at all times. I was hit in head so hard with the boom that I saw colored circles. About the only thing I really remember was thinking I have to fall back in the boat and not the water. I laid in the boat expecting to pass out. No book can teach you that one. But you bet I never made that mistake again! (my head hurts just thinking about that one). Search and see if you find that book. It is really excellent. Quote

I have been going to the library and requesting sailing videos and sailing books...funny how none of them made much sense until i started building the boat...and looking at magazines...i will look into the book suggested.... as long as we are pulling up favorite quotes on the subject : "We learn by doing" Captain James T. Kirk My plans have been restored thanks to Mike! I've gotten a number of books over here that came from the mainland on loan and only cost me a couple dollars to get them. Ask and yee shall receive! Far cheaper than purchasing them unless you want them for the library. IN our case it was great to not have to bring them with us. Or take them home again. You won't be sorry that you are doing the interior work now as you build. It will all come together and there won't be a lot of nasty, tight crawling around to get things done. Just cover it up to protect it and keep on going. After all, Spring is here, baseball is being played and it is sailing time in the West. 8) Quote

As a teenager living in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, living on a very strict allowance a nice cheap date was a couple of bottles of Coke and a long ride from 69th St. in Bay Ridge to Stapleton on Staten Island, change ferrys to go to the Battery in Manhattan and back. We called it going to watch the ***Submarine Races***. Middles 1950s and that dear sweet SWIMPAL is still the love of my life! Another good one was a ride into Manhattan on the subway and a meal at Horn and Hardots. A roll of nickles could buy a whole lot of eats in them days. A neat little ceramic pot of baked beans for a couple of nickles in the slot. The Automat remember well...maybe ya don't. Quote
Dave R1 Posted March 23, 2004 Posted March 23, 2004 Adla, your Weekender is already a thing of beauty. Sorry your dog isn't so thrilled with it. Are you not giving her the attention she wants? It might be too late now but maybe not. When I got my plans I disassemble the book and put the pages in those plastic sheet protectors and put the works in a three ring binder. Some of the pages that got more use, I copied before hand to make sure I didn't lose the info on them. Other plans I've had, I copied the whole and put the originals away for safe-keeping.
