  1. Thanks Tom. Good info, and I now have a call into my insurance guy for HIS opinion/quote.
  2. Boat US has just responded to my request for higher coverage by offering me a policy with $8K coverage for $176 per year. How does that stack up with anyone else's results?
  3. Since I'm almost ready to consider Petunia as being "completed", I started to look around for insurance. I sent in the request for a quote form to Boat US and got back a ridiculously low ball estimate of her value ($3K), so I just called them and asked to speak to their underwriters to up that amount. Still waiting for their response which I will post here. I'm curious to hear what figures others may have insured their boats for, and through which companies.....
  4. Jay, Is there any reason you aren't just running your wire(s) up through the mast itself?
  5. The folks at the West Coast trailer sailing squadron just posted some shots of the 26 boats that showed up for their Cayo Costa weekend- Here's a few they took of 'Petunia' as Lennie,Margie, and I visited..... To see ALL of the boats that made the trip here's the link- http://ftp.ij.net/wctss/wctss/photos128.html
  6. Congratulations !!! Now get out as much as you can and sail her !!!
  7. As mentioned in an earlier thread I was having issues with my new 2.5 HP Suzuki outboard and the removable Duckworks bracket. I wasn't able to fully tilt the motor into an "up"position to keep it out of the water while sailing. When we sailed to Cayo Costa last week I experimented with a large cut out to see if it would be large enough, and it worked fine,SO I enclosed the cut out area and epoxied/painted it. It is now working beautifully and it lets me raise the motor easily and securely. I just through bolted some cleats under the deck, cut out pieces of plywood to the proper sizes, and "hung" them from the cleats. Then I ran triple fillets of epoxy (each being fatter than the prior one) to lock all the pieces in place. 4 coats of paint later, and it's done.
  8. It was the park regs i was questioning. Glad the trip worked out so well! Sounds like a good route to take next Winter !
  9. Joe/Sally, Looks great! were there any "issues" with anchoring in those areas?
  10. This shot was just posted on the Water Tribe Facebook page showing Doug Cameron, and John Bell launching their boats at the start of the EC.
  11. Lennie, I just sent you a PM.
  12. David, Links aren't working for me. Anyone else having better luck?
  13. Lennie, I think the staring trick only works if you are Superman! Great job!
  14. Last shot ( I promise) of the board. When all was sanded/faired I coated it with an epoxy/graphite mix, and then wet sanded that surface down to 400 grit until I got THIS finish on her....
  15. Just found my "board folder" of pix. This shot shows the board after the shot was installed and after i had rimmed the edges with both carbon fiber and Kevlar tape. Belt and suspenders again...
  16. McMaster Carr sells very small lead "shot" which is what I used for Petunia. I built the center board, made a cut out, closed off one side with a layer of glass cloth and then poured about 5 pounds of the small shot into the cavity. I tamped it down pretty well, and being SO small there wasn't much room left for air pockets so it was a pretty dense fill. After that I poured thinned epoxy over the shot, and then sealed the open side with another patch of cloth, and covered the entire board with a layer of cloth. I also added a strip of Kevlar tape to the entire rim of the board for anti collision protection. She has worked perfectly so far, but if I were to do it again I might have gone a little lower on the board with my "pocket", as well as adding just a few more pounds of shot for good measure.
  17. It's now official: both the EC and Ultimate marathon have been cancelled at CP 1 at the request of the Coast Guard. I am sure that there will be much more about this in the immediate future, stay tuned....
  18. Reports are sketchy, some conflicting. Anywhere from 4-11 rescues this AM. Crews all reported safe so far, some boats maybe not. A few boats had already reached Check point 1 safely, with others closing in. This is going to be a royal cluster f... as not everyone seems to have their phones turned on, or can't be reached by their shore support teams. Coast Guard is using all resources including jet skis to stop boats from proceeding.
  19. Not sure if the folks on the water are going to abide by this yet: http://www.nbc-2.com/story/28287612/coast-guard-terminates-water-tribe-challenge#.VPs5xoY8KK0
  20. Race is off to a rough start this morning with multiple rescues already recorded. Coast Guard has a 'mandatory weather hold' on the race at the moment, but no idea how many competitors even know about it. Last I saw, Dawn Patrol and Mister Moon were both holding their own, DP went "outside", MM went "inside". Constant reports available on the water tribe site....
  21. Hmmmmm, For some reason I can't get the upload/thumbnail feature to work properly today. These should expand when clicked on, but they aren't on my machine....
  22. Thank you gentlemen. Chick, here is a shot of the ports you mentioned. The product I used to 'bronze is called 'Sculpt Nouveau', ( http://www.sculptnouveau.com/) It's a water based polymer originally created by the US Navy to coat tin roofs! They have a couple of different formulas, but I've had the best luck using their "B"coating topped with a few coats of their "C"formula. It's relatively cheap, and a little goes a long way. You can even machine buff the 'C' formula when it dries (minutes later...) ! I've had it outdoors for almost 6 months now, and the ports have actually started to show a patina.... here are some pix showing the ports from their start as plywood, to the installation 'jig' I used to insure they'd all be the same height, and then the bronzed parts before/after installation. This coating is SO good I used to use it to coat styrofoam statues I'd carve on a CNC machine for exterior installations on the outside of buildings (last picture....).
  23. Lotus, It's been a pleasure watching your build from start, to splash.....Congratulations!!!
