Steve, I have used white oak, sassafras, cherry, and yellow pine for breasthooks, butt blocks, and knees. The size often determines what I will use and I look at the wood characteristics to make the decision. My favorites are the Sassafras and White Oak, but will use the Cherry if I am lucky enough to find it.

I usually do not round the corners or put a bevel on them unless I am unable to get the two panels to lay right. I have taken a small hand saw and cut along the edges without removing the stitching to get them to form together evenly. Sometime the stitching will need adjusting too. I have built several stitch and glue boats, and several other types too, such as lap strake. I absolutely hate rework and avoid it whenever possible. I have sold all but my Spindrift 12S and the Amphora that the boys built a few years ago. I may never sell it as it has sentimental emotions for me and my two youngest sons.

I have always thought Pilgrim was a very cool boat. This is a great picture.

I am tickled to know that someone has built a PS26. I am trying to get mine started but am still working on the funding for materials. Your work looks excellent. Can you post more pictures of the boat?

I had a friend, he passed away a couple of years ago, who swore by the Beetle cats. He use to live in Boston. I would like to look one over someday and maybe sail it too.

I just got off the phone with Graham; had a nice chat too. I will need to give Carla a call just before I start cutting wood to get any of the latest updates to the plan set. This depends somewhat on the city inspector's opinion of the shed plans, which I have yet to get too, so maybe by October this year, one way or the other.

I keep talking myself out of this project, and spent the last year looking at other boats. If I cannot have my PS26 then I would only settle for two other boats, first and foremost, a Cape Dory 30, second an Island Packet 28 or bigger. Both have other shortcomings. The PS26 would be trailerable and storage much easier to deal with. In the long run, I would get a lot more bang for the buck with the PS26. I was discussing this with my wife, Edith, a few evenings ago when she told me, urged me actually, to build the PS26. It surprised me. She does want the rest of the furniture she requested done by this winter too. I am still struggling with where and how but I think I have a solution if the city will allow me to put up a temporary shelter for 2 to 3 years. It looks like one of those Stimson Marine bow roof sheds would work with the snow and handle the winds. Snow loading is a worry. We can get 2 to 3 feet of wet snow in a matter of hours sometimes, along with gale force winds. I need to check with Graham about any plan updates but then I should be ready to start working on the pieces and details that can be done in my shop prior to assembly. I turned 60 in August. The clock is started. I want to retire in 2 to 3 years from August, and I want my PS26 ready to launch by then. Scott, have you started yet?

Any news yet as to how Graham and Carla are doing since Irene paid them a visit?

Edward, I bet Graham or Carla can fix you up with this sort of thing...once they are back up and running. They shut down for Irene and I have yet to hear how they are doing. You submission deadline might be too soon? Just a thought.

Darn, I cannot remember what I used on the Spindrift's bailer, but I did route it out to be flush with the hull, nuts to the inside, and under the c/b seat. I probably used Dow 5200.

Wow, Bob. Have you tried getting this story published? This is well documented and the pictures are excellent. Have you published anything since the chisel article a few years ago. That was in Wooden Boat if I remember right.

I know exactly how you feel. I gave my first boat to the Sea Scouts when I left home for the Navy. I have always regretted that one. Since then, I have had several boats, each with lots of memories attached. I always feel melancholy when one leaves. The money in my pocket does help though.
