  1. I have been looking at this Mystic Sharpie design for years now and it came around again while I was Googling about dories and sharpies. What do you all think of this design? http://www.woodenboat.com/boat-plans-kits/32-mystic-sharpie-ketch
  2. This story at Duckworks is pretty good too: http://www.duckworksmagazine.com/12/projects/pierre/
  3. This is the boat design in the article I referenced. St. Pierre dory, which I think is a John Gardner design. I have a couple of his books but nothing about this particular design. Link to a source of plans, which I have not explored yet: http://www.nexusmarine.com/st_pierre.html After reading the story in WoodenBoat, it has peeked my curiosity to learn more about this design, and maybe even build one. Thanks for all the information and insights, Paul, Chick, and Ken. I appreciate your help, as always. By the way PAR, did you get my email a couple of days ago?
  4. This is a really good book, which I have had for years now. I did not think it had a comparison to the Dory but it has been a while since I read it. Time to dust it off and take another look. Thanks for the reminder, Chick.
  5. I did not pose my question well. I am wondering what the difference are between a dory and a sharpie. Why is one a dory or a shapie?
  6. I was reading a fascinating story in WoodenBoat, July/August 2016, "The Odyssey of RAGMEG" starting on pag 56, about a man who singlehanded from Nova Scotia to Southern California, via the Panama Canal. It started me wondering what the differences were between the Sharpie designs and the Dory designs. Doing Google searching just keep bringing up small boats, skiffs or dinghy sizes, or Cape Dory designs. Nothing I was hoping to find so far. Does anyone here have some good sources that would simplify this question of mine? Thanks.
  7. I know I am slow, but this thread could use some updating?
  8. I still have a copy of the one made for the messing-about.com boats that were built the previous year or so. It was the year my boys built their Amphora "Dragon". A B&B calendar sounds really good and I would buy at least one every year.
  9. Wow, another year gone by. My youngest son and his friends have started using the Spindrift 12 that was built a few years ago. It sat, never splashed, as my knees started hurting and we needed a good engine. Got one last year. The boys do not sail it, but go to small lakes and fish. No pics yet, sad to say. Meanwhile, my knees are better and my diet is working. I expect to build another boat, perhaps a Core Sound or a Princess Sharpie, in a year or so.
  10. Good question with good answers. That is why I like this forum.
  11. There is an even better idea: Amazon. Thanks.
  12. Just thinking about this. I could take some pictures of some of the books and post them on Craigslist. There are a bunch on boat building, rigging, sailing techniques, repairs, etc. Who knows? Maybe someone would actually buy a few of them that way.
  13. Perhaps something from the folks who make the Zuma? The cockpit area looks very similar.
  14. I have purchased from B&B and Carla is usually pretty fast about getting stuff out.
  15. I have several boxes of boating related books ranging from design to operations that I no longer want to have taking up space here. I do not want to spend much time on this either. If someone wants them and can pick them up, they are free. If not, I plan to take them to the local library where they will sell what they can and dispose of the rest.
  16. Boat builders really are romantics at heart, and music is our blood.
  17. I have been thinking about this. I cannot recall ever seeing a spam or sleeze posting in these forums. Not saying they have not happened, I just do not remember ever seeing one.
  18. Joel, Weren't you the one sailing on Galveston Bay?
  19. I am still working at the KitchenAid Portable Appliance Lab, and trying to get my small wood working business to make a profit. I hope to make some money while retired. Orders have been scarce as hens teeth lately and I am looking at shifting products....exploring it anyway and doing some market testing. Oh, I got into Ham Radio late last year and have been spending time playing with that. Our two youngest, who you met, will finish high school this year. I keep dreaming of trips to Texas but the pocket book and the vacation schedules and school schedules are daunting. Still, I dream.
  20. Charlie, what are you doing to pass the time now a days? Did you reopen your shop?
  21. I had no idea she was that old, nor that Laura had ownership. I thought you did because of that trip back from the East Coast to Matagorda Bay sailing solo. I am glad you have Tehani back. Is she down at the same marina as when I saw her? How is Laura doing? I have not seen any of her art posted in a while but enjoy the pictures and the gourd we have here.
  22. Hi Charlie. It is good the hear from you again. How did the mast get broken?
  23. Hi Joel, I have not been visiting here much lately either. Today I had a few moments to check in and look around. This has been an excellent place to meet other boat builders and share needs and ideas and help. I have made some friends here as well and that is good. I feel remiss for not visiting more often lately. Greg.
  24. I just heard that the Texas 200 is going on this week. I must be slipping as I have not seen any posting about it here this year. How many of our folks are participating?
  25. Well, it definitely came from Duckworks, in four sealed ziplock and unmarked bags. I used one of the bags. This was purchased about 8 years ago. Now I will hunt the paperwork. I am pretty sure it was sold as Maple or Oak wood flour and I doubt I would have bought Pine, but I might have if it was cheep enough and I was experimenting at the time. I cannot locate this Duckworks invoice. I trust that Chuck is correct as my memory is often missing a bolt or two. I was building several boats and had this flour sometime in 2004 or 2005, as a guess. I wonder if Chuck can locate my order from back then?
