This is not going to be fun. Run like hell Charlie!

The rig is pretty much dictated by the boat you build. Some can use either rig and some are locked into one or the other. Gaffers can operate very well with flat bottomed, centerboardless hulls where marconi rigs will not perform well without the long fin keel. You really need to decide what hull configuration you are interested in and then see what rig works best. I have only seen one Stevenson design with a triangular main and we have no other information about it except the photo. Who knows how she sailed or performed. IMHO the combination looked like hell, but hey, to each his own. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder as they say. Were you interested in a Stevenson boat?

Dave is right, the less holes in the keel the better. Make that lag a bit extra long as there is substantial pressure on these rudders. I would dip the eye threads in the epoxy as opposed to trying to fill the hole. Too much epoxy and you can easily split the keel with the hydraulic pressure of forcing the liquid ahead of the screw

Glad to hear you are OK MIke. Sorry to hear abour the damage. Let us know if you need anything and stay in touch.

Funny how that works isn't it....... I have a silly idea for converting a PC hull into a tug mad the rounded stern is a must.
-
Mike how about a progress report on the new boat? We are all interested in how you finish off that round stern. Thanks..

Oh doesn't she look great! Nice work Adla. Yes the issue is upper body strength. On my boat this is also an issue when drawing the mast tip forward to clip on the forestay turnbuckle to the sprit. I recommend the tackle the guys are talking about to give you the mechanical advantage needed to make this easier. The same will hold for the hollow mast but to a much lessor degree. Have a great launch. You have well earned it. I like the blue better too.

OK, but you'll need a bunch more than one 5 gal can 8) The Wx sounds great. It is still hot (90s) here but the humidity has gone down a lot. Iwas up at Duke today testing and came out of the shelter and it was like Arizona. Hot and dry. Amazing for NW Fla this time of year. Don't normally get that til Oct when the west winds come, and the sailing gets easy.... Woops, wrong song. see you soon Bud. Thanks

Bud what is the gasoline situation up there? If I get there can I get home? I'll need 80 gallons to refill.

I left my mast as an octagon and the jaws were eating up the edges. I wrapped them in boot leather to stop the wear. It works very well.
-
Chad I extended my jaws this season. (+3") My main peaks higher than the plans call for so the jaws always rode on the tips. I went straight again but the curved look better I think.

I got a response from Dave today. They took some tree and roof damage but are otherwise OK. I am sorry to report that Dave's boat took a pecan tree across the bow. Damage assessments are pending.

Fun aint't it? I didn't loose a hat this time out...

Sounds like a funner day then mine Mike. Sunday the winds were puffy and light. I took a new guy out for a couple of hours and had a pretty good time. Yesterday it was an old Navy troop I have worked with for years. Paper and TV said 8-14s and 1-2 ft chop on the Bay. I opened with the first reef! It slowed down out in the big bay so I shook out the reef and hardened the main for all she would go. Winds got to where I dropped the peak as he was having trouble holding her. I've never had to do that before. Works good. We got a large puff and not watching what I was going let the main sheet slip through my hands. After him turing up wind I started to haul in the main to get the bitter end. About half way there he lets the boat jibe!!!! That was fun, in a now ++25 kt wind with growing seas. We got her back under control and I set him up for a down wind run to the west so I could relax a bit. The wind and waves kept building over the next 20 minutes or so and I decided it was time to head back to the shelter of the smaller bay. When I took the boat and made the turn I couldn't keep her on the wind. No helm. I looked in the Laz and damned if a piece of 3/4 ply holding a rudder cable bloc had not failed by delamination across the entire surface of the 6x6 piece of ply! Apparently the jibe was all she was going to take and it lasted just another 1/2 hour before completely parting. The face lmination just pulled away. The epoxy held very well but the ply just ripped away. This is wood failing not the glue. Oh well Stevenson said to bolt them through the hull. Now I'll follow the directions. Say, I've never had to run that 9.9 at full mil before. It took 100% to maintain a course into the wind and waves. Just another beautiful day in paradise. Miller Time was declared in mId bay and fun was had by all. Strangely, my friend wasn't telling any more sea stories. I will speak to the Manufacutrer about the materials warantee on this thing! He fixed the tab after all.

I am surprized no one answered you . I saw this yesterday Jake and figured you were refering to Charlie Jones in S. Texas yes?? He and Laura are fine and have been active on the TS board the past couple days. If it was another Charlie please specify and I'll see what I can find for you.

Well come over anyway and we'll take the Saralee out.
-
Can you make the messabout at the end of the month?
-
It was my new zone alarm fire wall. Wish I knew what all those settings were. Anyway I anback in usiness. Thanks frank.
-
Any one else getting the red X inplace of the graphics? I fixed this once at work and can't remember how.
-
Thanks Mike. So far so good. It is clear and a million right now and I'm going out to finish the fence repair project....

Now comes the old test engineer with the questions. What does the working load of the eyes need to be? Add 20% for safety and what is the number? Now how much force did you apply with that vehicle? How did you mesaure this force and was the strain gage calibrated? To what tollerance? Was this rope good yacht grade rope or the lumberyard stuff?I suspect you overstressed the eye by several orders of magnitude pulling by it with a car. I "doubt" (never measured) the maximum pressure on my Vacs main halyard is 500 lb. Then again the more splices you do the better you will get at doing them. When you get it just right you can do mine too.

Thanks Bud. I'm in. I desperately need the vacation. Too hot down here this year.
