  1. Thanks Charlie! This thing is going to be a balancing act on such a small boat. Too tall and it will look like hell. Too short and it is worthless. Then there is the main sheet rigging. This almost begs for a block on the coach roof center so the main sheet could pull straight back, but, there is no where to mount it where it doesn't foul something else. Ah, the 175% Vac??? Thanks again for the drawing... v/r Craig
  2. Russ if you e-mailed the stuff to me I would post it for you. We have hit on another topic of interest for most of us. Tthanks
  3. Russ can you send a sketch of how you made this? Maybe even a photo??? Please , please , pretty please!
  4. While putting a fresh coat of paint on my Vac's mast, in a crowded garage, I managed to stick my fat a.. into the compression post and knock it over onto the driveway. The cute little douglas fir rain cap shattered when one corner hit the ground. It didn't glue back togather very well either. The Mate keeps talking about a binini but my boom is too low. Well, you know where this went. The new conpression post has been cut and the first coat of epoxy is drying as I type. I added 18" making it 80" from the keelson to the top of the tabernacle tennon. I am wondering if setting the mast will be more difficult now? The geometry will change a bit. Is this the time to change to a cutter rig? I could fab up a new sprit in a very short time. I was not going to do this mod this year but what the hell. The new stub is more than half done now. This taller spar makes my boom crutch too short. I could make another of the same type, however, I am hoping there is enough clearance now for a gallows. Someone had a nice one in a photo some time back. Does anyone remember where the photo is or have a design to share? I actually need the gallows to hold the folded mast with some kind of support to lock the boom in below the mast. I would like to hear your ideas. Thanks... Craig :?
  5. The Pedido Key Wooden Boat whatever group and Pirates Cove Marina are holding the boat show this year on 3-4 Mayover in Josephine. I was over there a few years ago and it was a real good time. Dan Kilpatrick should be down here full time by then and wants to go. Mike Cagle seems interested in going and I thought you might like to come along. We could all enter our boats and see what happens. I am trying to get Ed Jones to come too if his leg gets better. I have tried to bribe him with beer and letting him sail my boat. I thought Ed could enter his skip jack. I figured show up Friday night and leave Sunday afternoon late. What do you think? If nothing else we could boil bugs and drink beer. http://perdidowoodboat.org/ http://www.piratescoveriffraff.com/
  6. Yes Ray, a commercial or well designed home built radar reflector will work much better than the foil. You are also right on the open sea fog. On occasion we also get
  7. How about it Three Horse, can you make it? I was visiting your site yesterday. Looks great! I love the changes. The interactive map was really nice. Want to do Chotawhatchee Bay?
  8. I have spent the last seven years testing radar systems for the DoD and FAA and can possibly help with this discussion. The fact of the matter is that the tin foil will serve as radar reflector within the wooden tube of the mast. The return will be better if the foil is rolled into a smooth tube prior to inserting it into the mast. A piece of foil fixed with tape around the mast will also work in an emergency. Two sections about a foot apart will give a very large RCS at marine bands. A crumpled mass of foil will scatter the return and diminish the apparent RCS of the boat; however, it will still provide a larger return than just the boat alone. While fog is a hazard, it is by no means instant death for the small craft skipper. Fog never just slips in. A careful watch on the temperature and relative humidity will accurately predict the formation. When the temp falls through the RH fog can form rapidly in still air. In the aviation world this is a big deal so we watch it closely both before and after takeoff. If you are in the shipping lanes with our little boats and the fog overtakes you, smart money will get to the edge of the channel or better yet get out of it. As I said, the foil is a work around for not having a reflector but not a very good one. Boat-Us has manufactured reflectors starting at $22 US and they go up from there. Worst Marine and Boater

    Raising the Boom

Scott when I did the tabernacle mod on our boat I had to raise the compression/stub post by nearly 24". I cut down the stock post for the tab and spliced a new section of 4x4 to the old. I routed out a long trough on each face about 1" deep and embedded a 1/2" piece of steel rebar cast in epoxy. That stub mast will be around long after the boat is gone. I only restored the design height but the same process will work to raise your rig. This is an easy mod to do. Mine needs to be raised too but I need to wear out, or rust out, the 3/16 SS shrouds first. A bit pricey to replace those after only two years
  10. It does the same to me Frank. I log in and the screen size increases about 1/2" or so. Log out and it goes back to a normal full screen fit. Interesting problem...
