On these boats you can't steer to the target when close to the wind. You have to sail up wind/current what ever to compensate for the drift. Determine where you want to go as you did, then steer into the wind sufficiently to make your course over ground as direct as possible to the target. The closer to the wind you try this the worse the leeway is. The best I have been able to get Saralee to do is about 38 or so degrees. Close to the wind the leeway is hell and the is no room left to compensate without ending up in irons. Fall off, go like mad then tack back to a point above your target and reach over to it. It takes a bit to get used to.

Dacron sails are formed using a heat press of resin process that seals the surace. The entire material is a form of plastic so the color has to be put in first and continued with each step in the processing. The only way to change the color is with a mechanical adheasion process such as painting or other mechanical bond. The only was to truly change the color is to get blood all over them, or rust, or mildew....... Anything you desire will not work.

Nothing says NEW like sharp, chrisp sails with no blood, rust, or mildew on them. Now my sails on the other hand......

You would be surprised what a pressure washer and a fire hose can do CS. I must look worse in person then in the photos.

Light gaffs are good as long as they don't bend under the weight of the sail and the tension of the peak halyard. If I understand what you are proposing, the head of the sail is all the holds the gaff near the mast, ie no gaff jaws riding on the mast to keep it centered over the sail head. If this is the case the stress will all be on the last lug in the sail track. This will impose shear loads on the sail at that lug, big ones. What do you mean by "mast protrusions"? The gaff needs to be attached to the main such that as the gaff is raised it brings the main sail up with it. It also needs to be restrained so the inner end of the gaff is centered on the mast at any angle. This can be accomplished using jaws, a saddle, a hoop, or, if you have sufficient track length and the track cars will take the strain, a track car set to pivot on the end of the gaff. The large brass eyelet at the head of the sail should be your lifting point and attached to the bottom of the gaff structure. Have a look at Franks Gaff Rig Pages on this site for examples. As the guys said, pictures would really help solve this one.

I started with the 6 inchers and people felt sorry for be and gave ne BIGer ones I have one 12-14" and a couple of 8s. I tie to the after cletes, grab rains and aft shroud. It is a real problem here where barnicles cover everything!

Yes Pipefitter I would, by the photo, suggest this is a row boat. She looks to weigh about 5lb less than a brand new truck! Up home they would row this on the smaller lakes and put a one lunger on it for the bigger waters. Keep the paint up and they would last for ever. Folks would make these and leave them at the lake or pond for anyone to use. I thought sharpies were all double enders??????

If you haven't posted in a long time your user name configuration may not match the "new" requirements. They had some problems over there and will now not allow Handles. It must be real full name. This all since the big crash. Re-register and it should work.

I use latex semi gloss on the hull and rustolium satin above the lower rail and on the deck and house. Both art easy to touch up and the price is right. My bottom paint lasted 6 seasons and was in good shape but a repair job on some rotton wood forced a repaint. Then don't you know I couldn't find the color code. The new paint is not really blue enough.

Mike that is called the big sky little plane theory. Just like the Golden BB it isn't true. One of my pilots damn near did this same thing about three months ago during a test mission. Eyes on the autopilot and no one looking outside! Ask me about this one when we see each other. :shock:

Hey Hoser! I thought the snow snakes got you. Glad to see they didn't. About 83 here today. Wind out of the SW about Force 8. Went out Saturday and almost couldn't get her to turn down wind. First time I ever had to play with the Gaff peak to adjust the power. Kind of neat the way that works. How's Barb and the girls?
