The mast height needs to go up the same amount or more than the distance from the stay sail eyelet to the lapper mount. You need a bit longer bowsprit to accomadate the lapper moving past the stay sail. On my boat I have extended the sprit by ~48" and the top mast is ~70" above the top of the main mast with suitable new fore stay mounting installed. PAR recommended to me not to go so big with the cutter rig. If I recall he said to to stay below 120% with the new sail if I was going to use both at once. After looking at some Class A Friendships and other cutters most have the headsail covering about 75% of the foretriangle when flying cutter rigged. For the big lapper I will hank a 120 or 130 on the stay sail shroud. I have also added whisker stays to the extended bowsprit to control the lateral effects of setting the fore sail flying. I tried to taper the fore sprit by about 60% using laminated DF 2x4s and have broken it already before the first sail was raised. (It did have a preexisting flaw) Maintain the same strength all the way out. If you use an additional top mast you may need after stays for it depending on how you make it and how stiff it is. Lots of engineering to this mod. It is not trivial if it is to work correctly. A 130 lapper would give nearly the same extra drive but wouldn't look half as pretty.

Great looking trail boards, and everything else by the way. It doesn't look to me however that there is room for the two holer up front there where they go? Is this a design trade off or an omission?

Are there any? The time has come to finish rigging the tops'l and cutter rig for my boat and I am looking for something a bit less $$ than West Marine. Everyone seems to be the same price. Are rigging materials fair trade items or have the manufacturers all decided what the price is going to be? Even the cheap stiff is the same price as Harkin.

Those board look like they took a lot of work. What are the small symbols?

OK here are the photos of my trailer. The guy who built it flubbed up the estimate for the dual axils so he built what he wanted , not what I wanted. I wanted dropped axils and frame and got a flat frame that was a bit too high for the boat. He also made the trailer 30" not the 26" I specified. Then again for the price I took it. The ski jump bunks proved to be worthless. The front rides on the keel firnly inthe keel box and the upturned bunks just added drag when launching or recovering the boat. I cut them back to the next aft riser (~30% reduction in length). Anyway, pose your questions if you have any.... Oh yes, another important modification was the addition of oil bearings. I love them. Tha is the douser I have been refering to. They work very well, a friend up in the GWN had one on his cutter. That was dog years ago.

Jeff, Sailrite is the way to go. Thier Jeff will work with you as long as required to get what you need and want in your kit. He and I talked about the sails for the Saralee and he recommended some modifications ( like loose footing) that really improved the performance of the boat. I deal with Sailrite frequently and have never been dissapointed. Super service always.

You are so right about the spar urethane. I used it last year with very poor result. That stuff didn't last 3 months in Fla. This year it is Rustoleum's Spar Varnish that is supposed to be very UV proof. If this doesn't work I'll spend the bucks and get Bristol.
