I have a skeptic look at this but will forgo that portion and to say, yes I am concerned with this but sit back and await for more information before I personally cut my head off and run around in the middle of the barn yard.  ...

And this is different how?....just kidding. ;D

Well I don't think that I ran as fast as the Mexicans did when reducing their numbers by tens fold when you read the reduction in numbers from two days ago.

Who are you going to believe?

Scientists see this flu strain as relatively mild

Genetic data indicate this outbreak won't be as deadly as that of 1918, or even the average winter.

As the World Health Organization raised its infectious disease alert level Wednesday and health officials confirmed the first death linked to swine flu inside U.S. borders, scientists studying the virus are coming to the consensus that this hybrid strain of influenza -- at least in its current form -- isn't shaping up to be as fatal as the strains that caused some previous pandemics.

In fact, the current outbreak of the H1N1 virus, which emerged in San Diego and southern Mexico late last month, may not even do as much damage as the run-of-the-mill flu outbreaks that occur each winter without much fanfare.

the situation in Mexico as I understand it is that the number of confirmed cases is the smaller number where there has been definitive ID of the virus in question via tests,  Higher number is number of suspected cases.

They were sending samples out to other labs, and now Mexico City has a lab equipped to test the samples (as of yesterday, I think).  Typically, the vast majority of the "suspected" numbers are confirmed as the particular strain once the testing is done.

My two cents worth on TV reports. Yes I am a grouchy A$$ old man but think about this. You watch the weather in the middle of Feb. the reporter tells you it is 15F. with a wind out of the notrh at 12 knots, making the chill factor 3F. Stay in doors and watch TV for futher reports. Six mo. later it is the middle of Aug. the same reporter tell you it is 97 F with wind at 12 knots, no wind chill factor mentioned stay inside or you will have a heat stroke. Watch TV for futher reports. My thought is find something better to do than watch TV most of it is bull. Bud ;)

We're taking this serious out here on the Mexican border.  Yes sir-e-Bob, yesterday TV reported a school closing because a 7 year old had a case of swine flu (confirmed).  The kids were sent home in the afternoon by the school board because of the danger of this kid infecting others.  The back story is that he causght the bug 8 days ago, stayed home, and recovered.  Yesterday was his first doctor  approved day back to school!  All the mothers were organizing sports activities and other group things to entertain the kids while the school was closed.  Bud is right that this is most likely another case of the media crying wolf.  Of course, after being hit on the old bean by falling airliner parts during Y2K what the hell do I know.....

Once a certain virus spreads to a numberof people, it is too late.

Yeah, no kidding.

Tell that to the thirty six thousand people that died last year.

Oh, wait.

What's that, you say...?

The media didn't talk about it...??

The media is dumb.

No, what I'm stuck on is the media's selective nature regarding what they deem important.

That's been my (only) point from the get-go.

Oh, NO..!!

Ray, look at THIS ONE...    :o

(  ;D )

ALERT:

The Center for Disease Control has issued a medical alert about a highly contagious, potentially dangerous virus that is transmitted orally, by hand, and even electronically.  This virus is called Weekly Overload Recreational Killer (WORK).  If you receive WORK from your boss, any of your colleagues or anyone else via any means whatsoever DO NOT TOUCH IT!!!  This virus will wipe out your private life entirely.  If you should come into contact with WORK you should immediately leave the premises.

Take two good friends to the nearest liquor store and purchase one or both of the antidotes - Work Isolating Neutralizer Extract (WINE) and Bothersome Employer Elimination Rebooter (BEER).  Take the antidote repeatedly until WORK has been completely eliminated from your system.

You should immediately forward this medical alert to five friends.  If you do not have five friends, you have already been infected and WORK is controlling your life.

Have a great day!

Well,  You have a daggerboard for a Spindrift 10.

You could just finish the boat.

Its probably somewhere in the garage I'm trying to re-organize.  What a mess!

The "Flying Pig Flu" could mutate and come back with a vengeance in the fall; that's what the Spanish Flu of 1918 did.  The first round was mild, but it "seeded" itself.  Then it mutated and came back.  Or, it could mutate so that it no longer infects humans at all (or is even milder than this round).  It takes so long for them to grow the vaccines that I'm not sure we would be ready if it does come back in the fall.

We could all sail offshore a few hundred yards, and live on fish, scotch and cigars (we'd catch the fish, making more room for the necessary provisions).  After 100 days or so we could sail back in to the uncrowded dock (all the powerboaters would be ill).
