I saw Steve Day's spindrift at the Pirates Cove wooden boat festival a couple of years ago and fell in love with it. Its certainly worthy project. I'm looking forward to following your progress. Greg Luckett Posted July 22, 2008 Author Posted July 22, 2008 Dagger board fabrication: I cut some walnut, sassafras, and white oak into strips yesterday, then glued them together this morning, once dry, cleaned up the mess using a block plane, then ran the assembly through the planer. That is the picture of the square assembly. Then it was shaped, which is the other picture. The inner strips are either sassafras or walnut and the two outer edge strips are white oak. I used a Makita power planer, a Bosch belt sander, a Stanley block plane, and a Porter-Cable orbital sander to do the shaping. This was after cutting the basic shape on the Delta band saw, and adjusting with a bench belt sander. Man, I do love having the tools! Quote

My Belhaven has been giving me fits for three months now. Every time I start out to work on the spindrifts I end up hooking the trailer up and disappearing for two or more days. I am beginning to believe if a fellow wants to get a boat done in a timely fashion he shouldn't have one thats always becking him to go sailing. Really shes looking good Greg. Scott Quote

It did help to get the boat shed and the fence done too. I was despairing of ever making progress on my Spindrift until those three major hurdles were out of the way. Now, I would love to hear about your two or three day Belhaven adventures. Quote

Yours appear to have more contrast than those in mine as I used cedar and spruce. BTW, that board has been going now for about 4 years with no problems so far. Greg Luckett Posted August 2, 2008 Author Posted August 2, 2008 I will admit to slowing down a bit and enjoying the hammock and just being summer lazy but there has been some work getting done on the boat. The trunk needed some end caps to make it look prettier and at first they were going to be just some thin white oak. Then inspiration struck, using a piece of red oak, and they now have a dolphin carved into the top and sea horses running down the lengths. The plan is to finish the caps bright. The boats name is carved into a piece of sassafras which is shown being test fitted. If the new resaw band saw blades get here soon enough it will be thinned down to 1/2 thick rather than 3/4, but it will do fine as is too. Some rounding and smoothing of the edges and transition into the gunwhales will make it look good. Quote

I have had it since last Xmas but am still a novice at its use. I have added the trunk cap installed pics. Tomorrow I hope to finish filleting, coating, and taping the cockpit areas. While that is drying I can start working on the gunwhales and the boat name board. I will try to remember to take some pictures of those stages too. I am thinking of carving the last laminate of the gunwhale with dolphins or seashells but would need a sled to hold the strips in the carving machine and it would take a long time to carve 26 feet. It took about an hour to do the trunk caps which were about 29 inches. Quote

Randy C. Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 Greg, Actually, I told my wife this weekend as we were flying into O'Hara airport that I wanted to sail on Lake Michigan or Green Bay. We went to Door County WS last fall and that's what got all this started. So, once I get done building it's not totally out of the question to trailer over, that would be a lot of fun. Plus, you could give me some pointers on sailing, lord knows I'll need a lot of that!! Quote

Greg Luckett Posted August 6, 2008 Author Posted August 6, 2008 There is one up near St. Paul, Lake Pepin, which I missed this year but hope to attend next year, and at least one down in Kentucky on Kentucky Lake. I got the cockpit coated with epoxy and the seams all filled and taped this afternoon. Next to fabricate a couple of knees for the transom to sides, add to the gunwhale, install the name board, and fabricate the seats. Oh, and the rear seat bulkhead too. Then it will be time to roll her over again. If the weather stays ok, meaning warm enough for the epoxy to set quicker, this might all be done by Sunday. Cooler weather slows the hardning even though I use the fast hardner. Here are the latest pics, including a better shot of the trunk cap carving on the forward end. Quote

My wife and I took a motorcycle trip along "the great river road" two years ago this September. Lake Pepin looked like a pretty nice lake to go sailing on. It's hard to imagine it's the Mississippi river. Quote
