In California, you have to remember that about .18 are state taxes, so we are often higher than other states. All of the gas we buy has about .18 federal tax tapped on to it. We took my wife's Sienna Van to the boat show yesterday, instead of my truck (which gets 17gpm). When it gets too expensive, even I will drive a mini-van! :roll: Quote

In California the states per barrel tax adds up to $6.00 a barrel. In Washington it's $31.00 a barrel of beer. And these bastards want to raise it by $31.00 a barrel, that would make JUST state taxes on a barrel of beer alone $62.00 a barrel. Man they are hitting below the belt here. Oh and last time I checked our gas tax was higher or on par with California's, our liquior tax is the highest in the nation, our smokes tax is second higest in the nation, and over all we sit at third in per capita taxes in the nation over California who I believe is fourth overall. Damn they piss me off sometimes. I mean the goverment. Yeah sure they are giving us a tax cut, in which day dream of theirs I am not really sure, but one of them they have. Sorry end of rant for now. The thing about 30 dollar/barrel pricing is that it hurts absolutely EVERYTHING. I mean, think about it: Practically everything you eat, wear, consume, dispose of, whatever, is brought to your local area by truck or some other transport. All using internal combustion engines. When the price of oil goes up, the price of shipping ANYthing to your locale goes up. :x :shock: :!: Quote

Frank Hagan Posted February 18, 2003 Posted February 18, 2003 Tim, we pay a "personal property tax" that is assessed each year. In California, the county assesses it, but it is different state by state. The state just makes sure you paid sales taxes on the materials, or "use tax" on materials bought out of state, and has a small licensing fee ($12 or something like that). But then the county tax assessor sends you a letter, and you have to provide a picture of the boat and he makes a determination as to how much tax you should pay. I have yet to get a personal property tax bill for my Weekender. They have sent me two letters, requesting the picture. So with the second one, I called them to make sure it wasn't lost in the mail. The gal looked up my file, and started giggling, and then said "Oh yes, Mr. Hagan, we got the picture of your boat. If the assessor feels you owe any tax (he he), he'll send you a bill." First time NOT paying a tax made me mad! Quote

I guess beer drinkers definately have it worse in Washington than California. And drivers definately have it worst here' date=' an oil producing state with refineries up the gazoo, and some of the highest gas prices (I just paid $1.8999 on the way home from work tonight). But to compare rates, you have to compare the total tax bite the state has. I've seen state taxes expressed several different ways ... comparing rate vs. rate, totaling all the rates and averaging them, etc. But the most fair comparison in my opinion is when you compare the total tax collected by the state per capita. Then I found a handy little chart that showed not only the amount collected per capita, but also per $1000 of income. [url']http://www.taxfoundation.org/staterankings.html[/url] California comes in 6th in $ collected per capita, and 12th in $ collected per $1000 of income. Washington is 13th per capita and 24th per $1000 of income. Oregon is 34th and 32nd. The highest? Connecticut in $ collected per capita, and Hawai'i in $ collected per $1000 in income. I understand paying more to live in California or Hawai'i ... but Connecticut? Sheesh! Quote

The figures from 2002 show your state ranked 20th in state and local tax as a percentage of income, but SECOND in total tax (including Federal income tax). When you are ready to get it registered so you can get your numbers, take all the reciepts down to the Dept. of revenues and show them the reciepts. They will ask some questions like how much the boat is worth and issue you a document that you take to the DOL. The DOL will licence the boat for you and you can expect to pay about 160 dollars for all the paper work and the registration. You can't really figure the value of you time in making the boat into the total. I came up with 3275 dollars as a value for the paperwork and they accecpted that without question. Now, second topic, the price of fuel. If you remember the last time we went to war in the midddle east the price of gas dropped the same day as the first bomb fell by about 20 cents a gallon. Of course the patroleum companies are gougeing us on the price of fuel, they have to make huge profits so the exects can get their multi-million dollar saleries. Quote

Me: "Well, my labor was free, I donated it". Them: "We can't allow you to do that, so we'll add $1000 on to the value of your boat." To be honest, they really undervalued the amount of time I spent on the boat. :wink: But it burns me that I have to pay property tax every year for my own free labor. :x Quote

He told me in return that the government was trying to come up with a way to tax sailboats...using the sail area as a guideline. :evil: I thought it was bad in Canada for taxes...having to pay a tax on your own labor is beyond reason. ...but then again, I don't live in Bagdad...so maybe it's not so bad after all. Not me but some. The real part of our costs are not in taxes, they are the hidden costs you pay to the goverment. Stuff like licenses and permits and other little things these guys can add on. That's where alot of money really is. Taxes are just a part of the total. And "Oh Yeah Babe" moving is well into the planning stage's now. The desire has been there for some time, but there was always a big snag. Having to find a job where ever you moved to. Well that snag has now been over come. Where ever I go my job goes with me. Kinda opens things up so to speak. Now it's where would I like to go, not where can I go, or where do I have to go. I have certain things I want to have. I want to be near salt water, that is not under negotiation, I want warm weather even in the winter. I hate the cold damp freezing weather. Been there, done that, have the T-shirt. It's just a matter of time now, the plan is already underway. The decision has been made. It's just the final details to work out before setting the whole thing into action. The place for you is in NW Florida where sails are used all the time and it rarely gets very cold. Just enough to remind you of why you are here. The NW is currently under 24" of snow with 2-4 more comming this afternoon. An assocoate up there has cleared his driveway three times in the last tow days. Seriously Paul anywhere west of Tallahassee is fine. S Florida had too many people but it is within driving distance. The cost of living here is cheap compared to the West or PNW where you are. You may like to consider this area. We sail all year round and the living is easy.... Quote
