I am new to the world of sailing and enjoyed your story as well. And aside from losing the boom you just had a little Woops, a little enjoyment and more experience under your belt!

I packaged up a sample to send out for testing from the link Frank posted. The testing of the sample is free but will take a couple weeks. will post the results.

I looked briefly at the link Frank posted and I believe I can send a sample through this link which I intend to do. Thank you Frank and Par for the info. BTW, the sample wood was installed as roll shutters for hurricane protection and is supposed to be Teak....Thanks again...Mike

Can someone verify that the wood sample shown is teak? After cutting, the saw dust is redish as pictured.

My first ever attempt at sailing was both embarrassing, fun and exciting! With the Spindrift nearing completion, and weather for a beginner favorable, I decided to try my luck and testing phase of the Spindrift composite. With the help of my son Jason we loaded the Spindrift into the bed of his truck and his kayak in the bed of mine and off we go hopefully to a secluded place on Hutchinson Island in Florida so as not to embarrass myself in front of too many people. The Spindrift Composite is almost ready for the water. I have been working on the rigging lately and because this is my weak point... among others, it is taking me a little longer. This weekend has been quite windy for a rookie sailor so i'll have to wait it out a little longer. I also applied a primer coat to the outside for some protection while in the testing stages. For those who are interested I weighed her in at 119 pounds, just the boat in primer coat... no hardware, CB rudder, etc.. I'm a little disapointed in that but it is what it is and I'm sure when under sail missing my goal with the weight will surely be out weighed by the fun this little boat will give. Will keep you updated as progress continues...Photos to follow

Your finished project looks great! From some of your photos I see you have a water softener, lift weights and drink a lot of water! What would make someone move to Idaho from the Sunshine State? Sounds real cold to me! Good Luck...Mike

In a previous post I mentioned I decided not to make the cut as there is no advantage for me at this time( no big yacht to put it on). I did choose the nesting version because it is a unique boat and I can make the cut in the future if things change as I have the back to back bulkheads placed according to plans. Also I'm interested in Graham's newest designs and am leaning toward another build...Maybe!?...Have to be extra nice to the Boss!!

The Spindrift is pretty much ready for primer coat. I worked 3 weekends filling and sanding and am happy with the results. Not perfect but acceptable. Next I'll be working on the tiller and tiller extension, mast step and a little more work on the mast.

WoW, you guy's are very observant, the other motorcycle is my sons crotch rocket. I only know it scares me that its top speed is 180 mph...Don't ask me how I know that!!
