Howard, thanks for that information. As far as I know Divinicell foam core should be ok with either polyester or epoxy products. But when the time comes for painting I will double check with the local suppliers to be sure. What type of foam did you use on your wind vane?

Is there someone that has built a Spindrift 11N and knows how much it weighs or is willing to weigh there's? I would like to do an actual comparison of wood construction vs. composite construction. I need an actual scale reading so I can compare apples to apples. Without CB and rudder

Ray, I have not officially placed it on the scales yet but I believe I'm pushing around 100 lbs.

Is it OK to pin the mast so it doesn't turn on my Spindrift instead of using the wood plug?

Howard, The pictures of your boat are Awsum, a great job! I'm not that far in the building of my Spindrift 11, but your photos boost the incentive to keep going. Again, Congratulations on a great looking boat!

I use heavy duty plastic wrap or plastic sheeting say from Home Depot and lay that over the wetted tape..Also peel ply( or dacron from a fabric shop) which is best. Brush this on to the wetted glass tape and it fairs it out nicely.

Ray, I was going to use the phenolic type micro but my supplier said I shouldn't use it below the water line...guess its ok the sureform shaper you talk about, is that like a rasp type file like the one made by Stanley tools?

Ray, I'm making some descent progress on the Spindrift . Since the last post I've built the centerboard, CB trunk sides and cap, rudder cheeks with built-in doublers, cut the foam for the boom, received the hardware from Graham, glassed in the forward and nesting bulkheads yesterday, added the hard points for the rudder on the transom and am vacuum bagging the glass on the inside section of the transom today and hopefully will install it tomorrow. I have not installed the doublers on the nesting bulkhead at this time as I am thinking of using Gary Prater

My point with just gluing two pieces of foam together, its fast, easy and hidden. with wood, the butt joint may show through the finish and although the scarf joint is great, look at the time it takes to do the job.
