I think any boat could work with leeboards. I have seen lots of designs from England and Europe that use leeboards as actual legs for keeping the boat upright in low tide /overnight/camping situations. they were around long before centerboards, (I think :roll: ) Some of the European designs have two "outside centerboards" which I think could also be called inside leeboards. Jim Mc...something, uses only one board on all his designs. I'm not convinced that you actually need two for sailing purposes. On the little skiff I built I used only one. It is designed more like a really off center centerboard, being that it locks down and is supported on both sides of the board. I haven't played with it enough to find out if there is a difference in tacking.

I guess I'm not sure how to attach the centerboard box to the bottom. I've never built one before, :oops: too unsure of how the attachment works. Maybe one of you nice people might discribe, with pictures, how you would go about installing a box from start to finish... :? See, I've read all the "old timey" books where they are using bolts, gobs of glue and flannel, and it still leaks ....There has got to be a better way

Transom, 3 frames and a stem, right? What length and beam are you looking at? Are you going to plank again? Go ahead and write a step by step. I'm always willing to take ideas. Here is my biggest hangup, (in regards to boats, I have lots of others) what is the best way to install a centerboard so it doesn't leak? :? I really wish you didn't start another boat. I have to finish my Weekender but I know whats in front of me... :shock: sanding :shock: ...so I'm kind of putting off getting to that point. Can somebody get me encouraged enough to put the darn shelves in so's I'll nolonger have an excuse not to flip her and start on the bottom... :shock: sanding :shock: :wink:

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain :!: We must all walk to the same drum...different is bad...everything must be by the book!!!!!!! yeah, right :wink: Every boat is handmade by a different person and everyboat is sailed differently. Keep fiddling until you find what works best for you. Small changes first. Remember the KISS principle. Go slow. The basic design is proven sound. Think about mounting a small cannon to handle the pwc's and others (read condenscending bureaucrats.) :twisted: For some reason I keep coming back to that idea :?

Looks like it was a very nice day. That nesting feature is very cool. Anybody comment when you took the boat apart? Is it possable to paddle around in half a boat? Me being me am just thinking of all the jokes I could play being able to split a boat in two and remain afloat :twisted:

As far as a large flat space to work in, try a school playground, out in the land of liquid sun you find that some of them are even covered...err, umm, probably best not to do that during a school day :roll: Or a park, or a cul-da-sac, or a parking lot, or a new housing development, or the flight deck of an aircraft carrier :twisted:

Florin, If you are building the poly sails I can attest that they are REALLY easy to make. I made a main for that little skiff I built in about an hour. That was with laying the spars on the tarp and drawing from there. That main is not much smaller than the Weekender main so figure what? a third again as large for the vacationer and adding a jib? I bet ya' you could make a set in not more than 3 hours adding all the grommets listed. Thing that took the longest for me (and the most boring) was lashing the mast hoops to the sails, not hard, just dull. That rope lashing to the boom and gaff was kind of fun. Made me feel like I was actually a sailer

Can't wait for the story about you and your daughter's sailing adventure I started my Weekender in March also....I hope to get done by the end of September...Ohoh, did I say that out loud? :shock: Ya' can't do that around here, people tend to hold you towhat you say :wink: Send us pictures and stories!! For some of us that is all we have until our boats are done

sorry, no pictures :cry: (I really have to get my own camera.) Anyway, very light wind in ski boat city. Ignored the boats and just kind of ghosted along. Lee board and rudder worked really well, I'm pleased. Sailed it right up to the beach, no worries with the kickups. Every now and then the wind would pick up for just a second and I could feel that she wanted to go. 8) With two of us in the boat we sat on either side of the seat on the floor and she seemed plenty stable. I'm thinking of pulling out the seat and maybe just running some low benches along the sides or pulling out the seat and just putting in a couple of those beach chairs that sit real low. (The first mate complained that the seat was not comfortable to lean against. :shock:) Ideas?

coud be your firewall too. I usually turn off my nortin internet security, when on Franks site and all is well, otherwise I tend to have issues. I do leave on my virus screener however. So, the short answer is most likely your end. :roll: :wink:

Took the beast I built down to a local lake. Yea, it floats!!! Upright, level, just sits on top of the water with no one in it, drops about one inch with my large body aboard... 8) . Couple of screw holes I forgot to fill caused some minor leaking but VERY little. Made oar locks (Thanks for the great idea Swimmer!!!!!) Bad design on my part, had the grain horizontal on one lock so of course it broke, duh. The other lock was cut on about a 45 degree angle so that held just fine. Stable enough to stand up in and rock back and forth. Didn't get the sails made yet so it was strickly a paddle boat. speaking of paddles (read oars) made a couple of 8 foot monsters (wanted to make sure I had plenty of room to get over the lee board) ripped a 2x6 into a couple of 2x2, rounded the edges just a tad, and screwed some plywood blades on. Yup, 10 minute oars, worked like 'um too. Might have been just a little long, like a foot to a foot and a half :roll: They really made that boat move though :twisted: Over all I'm so happy with the performance that I'm thinking of actually naming the little skiff...Odds-n-Ends. My son-in-law is supposed to e-mail me the pictures I took of the boat before we left to the lake so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I may actually be able to post something soon

Ok, Jake, checking, been busy painting the skiff, making the spars, building leeboard and rudder, talking son-in-law to come over and tell me how to use and upload his camera, etc. :roll: What the heck is a fire wire?

Now thats my kind of paddle, I think even I could do that :wink:
