Jet skis are like dirt bikes, fun if used responsibly...that being said, nothing ticks me off more than having a quite paddle/row/sail on a lake and have one of those loud monsters around. I feel the same about dirt bikes when I backpack. So...the answer would depend on where you would be using it.

ok, heres a question, any reason you couldn't just actually roll the boat over? I'm building on grass outside so space is not really a problem. Seems to me that if you padded the side you were rolling to with old tires or something to have a little give, the structure should take it without a problem. I'm also having an issue with the whole bondo shrinking thing...I've never heard of it shrinking when used in car repair...never had it shrink when I used it in car repair...I would think that there would be a whole bunch of really pi**ed off people if the bondo repair shrunk and came loose from their car...Why would it shrink when used on a boat? Can doesn't say it shrinks...Stuff seems to stick to wood as well as metal...perhaps this is in the realm of urban legend? Thoughts?

I'm in the process of that right now, so far that has been the most difficult job in the entire build :shock: . Luckly, I live close enough to Capt Jake that he helps me out when things get tough :wink: . What part of the world do you hail from? I found it was a great help to actually see a completed Weekender and sail in her to really put a push on getting my own done. peace

Thanks for the reasurance Mike. I am truly a hack and slasher when it comes to building things. I like the building process but don't want to make it a vocation. For me it is not the getting there, that is only half the fun. The best part is when you arrive!!!!!!

I know that sliding gooseneck was mentioned before. I have heard that it might not take the stress of the sail (?). Phil, any comments on you sliding gooseneck?

All right, I really like the look of boom jaws. From what I can tell they really don't seem that hard to make, after all, you have to make gaff jaws I guess what I'm worndering about is if you need to have a down haul on the boom to hold it down or if the weight of the boom itself will keep it down? Also, is there anything special I need to know about when I put them together? Or can I build them just like the gaff, jaws? Tdrown, didn't you go with boom jaws? How are they working for you? Any special problems or concerns? I think wrapping the mast with leather is a better idea than in the jaws themselves, easier to do and I would think last longer. Do you think that 4" above and below where the jaws ususally ride would be enought? Is a mast saddle necessary on a boat this size out would it be ok to allow the boom to drop to the cabin top...never mind, I'm already thining of problems that could/would occure if there was no saddle. All comments are welcome...come on, don't be shy, smother me in your knowledge. :wink: I really do learn so much from everyone on this forum, it's kept me from stepping on my own toes more than once.

Sometimes you people make me wonder, I spent all afternoon fighting to taper my mast I can see it now, first person that walks up to my boat will say "Handmade the mast did ya'" Yes indeed, it does have a "rustic" look :oops: No amount of sanding is going to help that much. yup, looks soooo easy from your pictures...so nice, so smooth. 8) 8) and then there is MINE :twisted: :twisted: hehee... I guess the important part is that it will be functional. Berry...or anyone else! Does that mean that it would be best not to taper the mast as the plans suggest? Or is the tapering so slight that it really won't make that much difference to the gaff jaws. I'm guessing that realistically tapering won't make that much difference to the weight since the mast isn't very tall anyway but might be enough to effect the gaff jaws. I've been hearing about the leather yoke area having problems and I'm thinking that part of the problem might be the taper, too much slop at the top. Ideas? Suggestions?

If you haven't already, try disabling your internet security program. In my case, if the nortin is enabled, I have loads of problems. If I disable it, I have no problems. So far Franks site has been "clean." Just remember to reactivate before you go anywhere else on the net. Ain't computers grand :wink:

OK alda, I wasn't kidding before about how clean your shop was...now your just making me look bad :oops: :wink: The only thing good about building on the grass under a tarp is you don't have to sweep...I do have to sometimes trim the grass around the keel however Work is over-rated, must play and build boats...someday I'll figure out what I want to be when I grow up. :wink:
