On the rudder plan sheeet, the drawing shows 2-inch squares to lay out the profile, needing a blank about 10 x 24. But, in the text, it says 3-inch squares laid out on a 15 x 30 inch blank. It also says to glue the rudder up from 2 plys of 3/8-inch ply, but on the cut sheet it shows it on the 1/4, mat'ls list doesn't call for 3/8. My gut is just telling me that the 3-inch squares and 3/8 material is going to be awfully big.... Input welcomed. I wrote Graham, never heard back. I'm confident it's going to be a great boat, but my high school drafting teacher would have failed me over these plans.... Bill Quote
Ray Frechette Jr Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 Graham is back in transit from Wooden Boat School where he just taught two coursess so is unavailable likley for a few days more. What may have happened is a transcription eror when Graham Updated the plans. Much of the text on his sheets are copied and pasted through boat plans and occasionally a proofreading misses an error. Anyway, I built a Nesting 10 myself and my plan heet labeled Rudder witha redrawn date of 03/03/94 shows 2 inch square with a blank of around 10 X 24 inches. No text as you mention on your plans. Text I have says "Rudder blade can be made of 1/2 inch ply or can be laminated like centerboard to a thickness of 5/8 ". No worries if you want to go with ply and only have 6 mm (1/4), simple laminate two sheets of ply together and loft out rudder on that. Once you settle on what you will use for rudder it self the rudder cheeks are got out per plans and use filler pieces 1/16 inch thicker than finished thickness of rudder. I have built to plans from a few different designers and Grahams are the easiest I have come across to read and understand. One sset of plans I have is for a Princess 22 waiting to be built when funds and time is available. Graham had to send me new sheets on that one as he upgraded his software and the dimensions were translated into something ewlse by the new software. When he go the new software he had to go in and reset several aspects for measures to come out right on some plans. Graham is generally extremely accesible, and in the rare times he is unavailable this forum can be a godsend to get clarification.... Week Before last Graham was teaching a class on building the Spindrift 10 and nesting 10 at Wooden Boat School. Last week he was teachi8ng elements of yacht design... Quote

I'd written a couple of months ago regarding similar discrepancies in the mast mat'l call outs, never got an answer that time either. Took my best guess. He's probably hustling to make a living like all the rest of us... Check out Michael Storer's plans sometime. They were the last ones I built to, I got spoiled. Crisp drawings, detailed and accurate. Anyway, thanks for your info, Ray. I just couldn't believe those rudder dimensions. Must have been pasted from one of the larger boats. BP Quote
Hirilonde Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 My plans are just like Ray's in regards to drawings and notes. I cut my rudder out to the 2" squares pattern. I used 18 mm (3/4") plywood for both rudder blade and daggerboard, but then I had the oportunity to buy it from my employer at cost and at a square foot price. What ever you decide on make sure to allow the 1/16th" extra that Ray mentions for the filler as you will need the added room inside the rudder housing and daggerboard trunk for room to move. Some people just use 1/8th" more than the material, but actually epoxy coating them first then measuring is more accurate. Quote

Ray Frechette Jr Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 As a general rule, if text and drawings are not in agreement, I would look long and hard to determine why not to trust drawings being right and not the text. If ever stuck and email to Graham not working well, give them a cal on the phone. Mornings work best. If Graham is away Carla can take down your question and ask Graham when they talk to each other. They keep in touch just about daily when he is out and about. Quote

You guys earlier drawings seem to call out an item that should be about what I was expecting. If it's wrong, I'll just learn to sail backwards. Thanks for all the help! Great forum! BP Quote
Designer Posted July 21, 2010 Posted July 21, 2010 I just got back from WoodenBoat School. The rudder blade is drawn from 2" squares and and the finished dimensions are 23" x 9 5/8". WE struggle constantly to keep all of our plan sheets up to date, sometimes it is our fault and sometimes it is gremlins, often it is CAD updates which do some strange things to the dimensions. I think that this one was, as suggested a cut and past error. If anyone finds something odd or indecipherable, please let me know as I am as keen to correct it as you are. Quote
