Lapstitching a lapwing.

The procedure is a litlle different from a normal stitch and glue because the boat is built inverted so the stitching is blind but the following procedure works pretty good.

1. fit the new strake to the existing one and clamp at the bulkheads and stem

2. drill sets of holes for 18 guage wire. one hole in the existing strake at the edge of the new one and one hole about 3/8 inch below thru both strakes. space the sets about 10 inches apart - a little closer near the stem.

2a remove the new strake.

3. thread 10 inch lengths of wire up thru the existing strake and flatten against the hull, ends pointing at the keel.

4. brush on thickened epoxy on the lap area of the existing strake

5. thread the lower wires thru the holes in the new strake starting at the stern. the strake will self align as you advance toward the stem.

6. after all the wires are threaded twist them snug but dont over tighten so the boards remain fair.

7. after the epoxy sets remove the wires with a little heat and pliars.

No hand made clamps or wedges required and no screws needed to bring the boards together where clamps wont work.

Dean had mentioned in a post on Lapwing #5 that you had a color scheme for Black Ruby.

He did not actually say it was black but if it is I am concerned about heat buildup with epoxy and black in the sun.  I do not know where you live but here in Florida it can be a real concern.  I would love to have black topsides but feel the sun/heat would be a problem.

Anyhow, my 2 cents worth.

Dale, here is the color scheme: graphite on the bottom of the hull, CB and rudder, Brightside Matterhorn White up to the last strake, bright side Fire red on the last strake (where Tom has green), bright varnish top sides, black mast, seattle gray seats, Iterdeck gray non-skid under foot. Think of a tropical fish called the black ruby barb. Along with the staysail which is red white and black. Main and mizzen are white.

I don't understand.  Are the topsides Matterhorn White or varnished?  I am guessing you mean the decks are varnished?

Wow.  That sounds great.  Can't wait to see it.

See her?  I can't wait to sail her!

Sorry, that was a bit presumptuous.

Dean/Herb, there are triangle area sailors who read this forum and aren't part of the local sailing club.  Maybe you can post a link to the new daysailors group?  I don't think there's competition with this forum since we're a ragtag bunch of builders all over the world and your group is meant for local gatherings.

Noun 1. ragtag - disparaging terms for the common people

ragtag and bobtail, riffraff, rabble

Speak for yourself  :P

This month I noticed that Fitch Lumber in Carrboro, NC, had 2x2 doug fir perfect for sprit booms.  As I recall, up to 12' long.  Very straight boards with clear straight grain.  I don't recall that they had 2x2 previously.  Too bad I don't need a sprit boom.

I was buying fir for stringers for Dawn's B&B Grand Diva kayak.  The full-service woodworking shop at Fitch ripped up two 2x2's on their accurate table saw for $4.  Took 5 minutes.  Probably saved us an hour of wrangling with our cheapo table saw.

I'm starting to wavier on the hull color - thinking about that Interlux Brightside Flag Blue - for all the look of it on the color chart it looks almost black.

Strake number 5 is on... - we need warmer weather here.

I painted Lapwing with eurethane Brightside while trying to get away from the trials of LPU.  I think Brightside is an over priced and under performing paint.  Disappears with any little scratch or rub and mildews worse than any paint I have used.  While covered with a tarp, the outside with Brightside mildewed badly while the interior, painted with Devoe epoxy had narry a sign of any mold.  I hear much better reports from Rustoleum and porch paint.  If the colors are suitable I might try tractor or farm implement paint since it is fairly inexpensive and pretty tough.
