I'd be up for doing the wineglass rowboat, I'd make some parts (drop in unit, transom, etc,) before hand if that would make it work. The trip from NC looks to be about 9 hours for me, Looking to add this skill to the glued lapstrake small sailboats i've been building. thanks, Dean

oh yeah - right - that's what was on the Precision - a kick up cleat-

so, do we also want to weight the rudder down as well? I thought I saw something about a line to keep the rudder down. Why would one want such a line if the idea is to have a kick-up rudder. I know I had a line to hold the rudder down in the Precision 185, thoughts? Dean

That's looking good John! Lapwing #7 is on strake #5 and everytime we look at her we comment on how big a 16 footer she is. Here in NC we are supposed to be in the lower 50's but this winter has been just cold for our area we can only get in the low 40's. But in NC we are used to this kind of stuff one day 40 the next day it will be 70. Dean

Tom, Do you think that "Disappears with any little scratch or rub and mildews" had anything to do with the conditions when you painted the boat = too hot, cold, dry, or humid? OR a bad batch of paint? Dean

I'm starting to wavier on the hull color - thinking about that Interlux Brightside Flag Blue - for all the look of it on the color chart it looks almost black. Strake number 5 is on... - we need warmer weather here. Dean

Tom, we will get some plans together to make that happen along the lines of one of our scheduled dates this summer perhaps. If you join up to the day sailors yahoo group you will get the schedule - else I can send it to you off line. I'd love to do something up this way to flush out all the local TSCA members to the lake at one time. Dean

OK - so this is a plug for the Carolina Sailing Club's new Day Sailors Venue which assuredly welcomes all traditional sailing craft and B&B Yacht sailors and their boats to monitor / join and sail about on the lakes near Raleigh, NC. Heck we might just get an inland B&B mess-about going with enough local sailors around. Ken Potts' CS17, Dawn and Paul Stewart's CS20, and myself (Dean Herring once Lapwing #7 is on the water) just about constitute a B&B fleet! Thanks - hopefully this was not over the top. Tom, John, Thanks for the weight clarifications = 240 pound for a 16 foot boat - good grief my Precision 15 was 450 pounds. Lapwing should be fast with all that weight gone. Thanks for your continued posting of pictures and lessons learned on Lapwing Blue Peter John. Can't wait for Herb and I to take a gone down east NC road trip to see Tom's lapwing. We've come up with a color scheme for #7 and will name her the Black Ruby. You got to say it like this though - arrhh - welcome aboard the Black Ruby.

I stopped by to see Herb and took some pictures, garboards are on as are the first strakes. Herb's going with the stitch and glue approach - looks pretty good to me! Dean

Richard, looks like you hoist this sail up the mizzen mast. Have you though out your sheets/lines and how you want everything to run? Halyards, sheets, snotters, down hauls...

hey Ken, the B&B site for the Lapwing shows the mizzen staysail in dotted line. I've got an email to Carla for ordering up the Lapwing sails but I don't think they include this sail. I'll ask about it this week. Too cold out there for me until late March I imagine. Hope to see you out there and get some tips on cat ketch sailing. Dean

Say - first post here. Herb is building Lapwing #7 for me. We don't live far from each other in NC. I'm not much of a builder I just get what ever it is to function and then I'm done. Boat building looks to be one of those arts that requires a good eye and a desire to make it look just right. Anyway, I see this on the side view of Lapwing drawings and have seen pictures of a CS17 with a head sail between the main and mizzen? What's it called and would you add this sail to the lapwing as it is on the CS17's? Thanks, Dean
