However I missed a few I am sure. My son and I are tooling up this april and pricing materials to weld a couple boat trailers. I purchased Glen-L's boat trailer book to add to my iddy biddy store of knowledge and I am thinking I am about ready to make the plunge and buy that welder. So how about it Fabricators, what do you have? I am interested in framing styles. I got a pic of Phil Gowan's boat trailer from a 6/21/01 posting on my wall. Craig's is there too! Robert Cox Posted March 21, 2003 Posted March 21, 2003 Ok, I'll be the first. I just can't pass up the chance to be on Mike's wall of Fame. This isn't a very good picture of the trailer, but it's kind of hard to get back far enough from the side to get a good one. This picture is a good shot of the bunks and center channel. This shot shows the trailer from the front with the boat on it. The bunks are made from a 2 x 6 on edge with the curve of the hull cut in it and a 2 x 4 on flat screwed down to the 2 x 6. The bunks mounts a made from 2 x 2 angle iron. Took forever to cut those with the jibsaw. The keel center chanel is made from 3 - 2 x 6's. The verticals are screwed to the edge of the horizontal. The trailer over all is 26 ft. long and the bunks just go back to the transom on the bottom so the transom at the deck hangs over the back of the trailer. I'll be moving the boat out of the warehouse soon so I'll try to get some better pics. Bob 8) Quote

Frank Hagan Posted March 21, 2003 Posted March 21, 2003 Here's my trailer: Its from a PowerCat 14' boat ... completely flat trailer. The keel support is a 10' 2x6 with 2x4 "rails" on it. I added the bunks later, after getting the boat on the trailer. I don't have a good picture of her where the bunks show ... they support the hull just to balance her on the trailer, as most weight is on the keel. This shot shows how much overhang I have off the back of the trailer (perfectly legal with a sailboat here, and helps "float it off" easier). Quote

Robert Cox Posted March 23, 2003 Posted March 23, 2003 Ken, I set my trailer up so that the aft end of the boat is supported by the bunks but the bow is supported by the keel. I know the pictures I posted earlier of the trailer aren't working now. I had some problems with the website and had to redo the photo album, but here are some new pictures. Took these pictures two nights ago after putting the finishing touches on the trailer. Star Chaser may not be ready for the water but she's ready for the road. I have to admit the trailer looks good. Almost like it was made for the boat. I thought the boat looked bigger on the trailer, but hooked up to the truck makes it look smaller. Now on the fiberglassing the deck. The bunks towards the stern not only seem to carry the wieght better on the road, but allow me to get in the boat with out wondering if the boat and I are going for a ride over side ways. I have used pics of my boat and truck to describe how big the boat is, not how small Nice pair, Very Sharp, keep us posted. Mike Quote

The point is that we all get Quality trailers to go with our Quality Boats. I am waiting for the snow to depart the rest of the way, before I can lay my metal out. Those boxes for the keel are going to be a must. I don't like the way the keel sits on just the few rollers of my current trailer. The long tongue is another plus, I about died when I clipped my Wife's new $40,000 RT Durango's hatch when launching in Seward last fall. :oops: That bow sprit is a long one, just ask the jet skier last summer, it will reach out and touch ya! After almost a month of work, new tongue, new bunks, replacement of all bolts and nuts, new lights, and new paint, it was turned into what you see here. Cost for that used trailer $150. Total cost to have ready for a Vacationer $700. Not bad for a dual axle boat trailer. Mike P. The bowsprit was one of my biggest concerns. As the trailer is set up, the sprit is two and a half feet behind the truck. I didn't want the bowsprit through the rear window of the topper. I had to extend the tongue by 7 feet to get the end of the sprit that far from the truck. I also extended the tonge channel or tube back under the main frame by 3 extra feet. Total length of the tongue, 16 feet of 7ga. 3 x 3 tubing Results: trailer fit perfectly to a Vacationer. I have decided that I will never rebuild another boat trailer. It was more work than building the boat, but now that it's done, I'm very happy with the way it turned out. Bob 8) Quote
