I'm glad you posted this.  I was all ready to put my foredeck on, I have even already painted the inside of the locker.  I just realized I haven't made a drain for my mast tube!!

Are you planning to paint the foredeck, or finish it bright? We are in the process of putting our foredeck on, but are being careful to not put any holes in the decking, with the intention of finishing it bright, which makes it a bit challenging to glue in place.

You are really looking good! I really want to see pictures of her sailing and you're getting closer every day.

I've been stewing over that decision since August.  Just this week, I decided to paint it.  Varnish is pretty, but it's slippery and needs annual re-varnishing.  I'm going to keep my varnishing to just a couple of trim pieces in the cockpit.  I'll probably paint it white, but the missus is trying to talk me into painting it blue.  Still thinking on it.

Decks can be a great source of glare, and they can be a great absorber of heat.  Something to think about when choosing a color.

The coaming went in over the weekend. I also made progress on the gunwales, rudder and numerous small tasks.

The rudder parts are complete now and ready for assembly. The tiller just needs a couple more coats of varnish before I put it all together.

Beautiful motor too!  (My wife has been twisting my arm to get one of those.)  Course, that motor's a little small compared to the one on CS17 "Southbound"  --shown with and without.   ; )

The outboard.  It's a Suzuki 2.5 (short shaft) and it wasn't an easy decision. 

My last small motor was a Honda 2hp and I really liked it (until I bashed it into a reef and then repeatedly sank it).  At only 28 pounds, it was a joy to carry around.  It was air cooled, so I could start it up without having to put it in the water.  But, it's expensive.  Local price quotes put it between $925 and $1,000.  It is a great motor, however, with a great track record.  Another downside is my local service.  My local Honda shop is terrible and I tend to avoid them like the plague.

I looked at the Tohatsu/Nissan.  It was substantially less expensive than the Honda, but it was heavy.  But, I have a great Tohat/Nissan dealer in town, so service wouldn't be a problem.  But, I just didn't like that weight.

In the end, I went on friends' recommendations.  Many of my West Wight Potter friends just swear by the Suzuki.  It's only two pounds more than the Honda, but with a half horsepower more.  It is also (reportedly) much quieter than the Honda.  And, it has a real neutral, as opposed to the centrifugal clutch on the Honda.  I don't know about service.  I don't even know where I'd get Suzuki factory service, so that may be an adventure some day.  The best thing was the price.  Porta-bote sold me that little motor for $675 delivered.  It was such a great price that I snapped it up.

I was hoping to just clamp it onto the transom, but yesterday's test fitting proved that impossible.  It's just too short to get the prop deep enough.  The long shaft model might have worked, but I'm not sure that you could tilt it high enough to get the prop out of the water when sailing.  So, I just ordered a Garelick lifting mount.  I've already stiffened up the transom with another 1/2" of plywood (just in case).  I'll probably buy some aluminum plate to sandwich it further.  But, that little lifting mount should get her deep enough to motor and high enough to sail.

  The motor Paul shows in the picture of my boat is the "Mega Honda Super 2HP".  Similar to the Honda 2HP you mentioned but the horses are Clydesdales  :cool:

  I like the Honda but it sounds like that Suzuki is a good thing, too.  Since my motor is a long shaft I've got a mount that sticks up just above deck level, but I bet it would work real well clamped right onto a CS20 transom and with a little doing I bet the short shaft Suzuki would be a good fit, too (Too late to stop me now, Paul - Dawn already read this).
