Oyster Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 Welcome and maybe if you can put the link to your magazine into your signature, other folks may enjoy the ever changing reads of some of the historical hulls too. Gunkholing comes in many shapes. Maybe some folks will thaw out and come out of hibernation and see your posts. There are some that do sail related hulls here. On the other boating forum here on this site the gathering of like boats last fall consisted of some craft too of simular classes. Check out the threads. Ken_Potts Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009  The first boat I built (the first boat I owned) was a variation of the six hour canoe. I had no sooner finished it than I started trying to figure out how to make it a sailboat. I put in a centerboard, rudder and a mast step. I got some nylon and sewed up a lug sail for it. It sailed horribly - Narrow beam and low freeboard ;D I ended up converting it back to paddle-only.  The second boat I built was a skin-on-frame kayak and I made a little downwind sail for the foredeck. It worked nicely and I enjoyed sailing it when there was a good breeze up.  I was visiting some friends this weekend and they've got a canoe hanging in the garage. It's a beamy critter (I think we could probably haul a moose in it if we had any to hunt around here) and I was thinking it wouldn't take much to make that into a real sailboat...  One thing's for sure - It doesn't take much sail to move a canoe or a kayak. Jim Stumpf Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 It is a Bolger designed 16ft Pirogue. The sail was increased from 40 sqft to the 65 sqft shown in the pics. I have also added a swinging centerboard and kick up rudder that were not in the original plans. She is a bit tender and it takes some attention to keep her going in a stiff breeze but alot of fun. I'm thinking about building one for my woman when she gets here, with her help, or maybe I'll help her....whatever.... ANYway, a piroque would be a good, somple project and will turn out a fun little boat. Piroques classify as canoes, so I'd like you to share some pics and info with my readers. 65 feet? So...when do you take the sail down, at 10kts? Sweet..... Quote

As far as wind the beauty of the sprit is that if the boat heels the sail inherently spills wind. I do have 1 reef that will take out about 10 ft and I have rigged the mast to still accept the smaller sail using the boom for the shorter sprit. The design can be found at Common Sense Designs or at least it could be when I built the boat in 02. Thanks Jim Quote

Some folks have long articles--the guy who circumnavigated Catalina contributed a four-part article; others get buy with a page.
