Sailing. Boy does that boat MOVE. In this picture we are stemming a full outgoing tide from a saltwater lake emptying into Matagorda Bay- The owner was delighted.

Charlie: The picture of the C@ 20 that you posted showing the boat sailing, shows the mizzen sail foot very low. Is that normal? I don't see how one could see  under or tack without getting hit with sail. Also. in the "shop made jigs" section, you mention a jig you made for cuttin g scarfs on a table saw. Do you have any sketchs or discription of this jig. Thankyou, M ick

We think the mizzen was miscut- we KNOW the main was- that's why it has a reef. Graham will get the sails back- he's already aware, can't figure why, but is gonna take care of it.

I keep saying- GREAT folks to deal with.

On the scarfing jig. Later today I'll snap some pics for you and post them It's a very simple thing and work very very well.

While your answering sail questions, here's one. I noticed you guys had the main reefed one notch but the mizzen full. How's she handle in that configuration? Any noticable weather helm?

I have talked to Charlie about the sails and they are definitely too long for the spars, I will have to do some recutting.

I think that the problem came from the different luff lengths on the different sail types and I got them mixed. I have straightened out the sail and mast plan now and I hope that it will be straight from now on. If any one has older CS20 plans and are about to make the masts they should check with me.

Pretty Boat Charlie.  I hope #85 looks half that good when she hits the water next month.

I, too, would be interested in whether 85 is "old".  I have the last section to add to the mast.

actually we had a slight LEE helm at times, but by and large the boat handled well. Would have been better of course to also reef the mizzen, but we didn't have THAT much wind.

Slight lee helm! Hmmm... Maybe that's due to the main riding so much higher than the mizzen and getting into some higher velocity wind. Strange though.

we also could not tension the luff on the mizzen so it wasn't drawing to full effect, which probably is what did that.

Scott- I was just an amateur builder too - in 1976.

Keep after it ;D I've seen a LOT of boats come from "amateur builders" that would put pros to shame. The amateur can spend unlimited time getting something just right- the pro has to do it first try, or second at least, or he loses money

You need 18' of track for the main mast and 16' 4 1/2" for the mizzen. I am sending you the new drawing with your stuff.

Do you have empty nest syndrome when a boat leaves or do you run to the bank...skipping and jumping?

Actually a little of both. The empty shop is very strange-takes a bit to get used to that.

And this time it'll stay empty pretty much- I'll be working on the Bayfield shown in the pictures and it can't come in. I'm putting a whole new interior in it. Right now it's a big cave in there. So the shop will have parts , bits and pieces, but no boat. Well- I HAVE to do some work on our sharpie ( Laura says) so it'll be in there some of the time.

But heading to the bank is always nice too ;D
