Storage shed or boat assembly shed??

I was peacefully minding my own business building lumber storage racks in the new shed/barn when my eyes began to wander on their own and my mind's eye started seeing the space in the shed that would be perfect for assembly of the Spindrift 12. 8) All that stuff sitting in the yard needing to get out of the weather could sit there another year, my boat building devil kept whipering in my ears. :twisted: Hmmm, me thinks. Boat building time again?? A lot of the materials in the shop that need to be stored in the shed are for the Spindrift anyway. Now that the shed is mostly done I can feel the excitement

I laugh once again when I see this thread with the beginnings of an off topic, to backslide into a boat related posting. Heck Greg thought he could hide from the main forum, but he has been found to be doing the same thing on another street corner, being a pusher. :wink: Such an illness which seems to have a short denial period, only to slip back into the addiction once again. I wish you well with your recovery period, at least through the holiday season, Greg. But I sense you will not be doing so well in your up and coming new year of a resolution to swear off boats and stick to honeydo projects in your new shop. To the rest of your folks happy whatever you do in time off period of the year, have a good one with your family and friends. Is that the proper way to speak in public now? :twisted:

The shed's primary purpose for being built is to store the lumber and panels and all the hardware and sails for the boats, which will be built in the shop again since there is now room to do so. The nasty weather forced me to store the materials inside....outside, even under tarps, did not keep it dry. Epoxy resin likes dry and does not work very well when the wood is wet. I have been forced to work outside when the weather was nice enough and in Michigan, that is a rare event. Frank, I believe I stated this in the beginning but just in case, this is the explaination. What I am thinking is the shed would also be a good place to set the Spindrift while her epoxy hardens. Cold weather makes that take longer. This will free the shop up for building details. Setting out in the yard are piles of pressure treated lumber for the fencing to hide the boat yard from the street and make the city happier. I had intended to move that into the shed for the winter but it will be fine outside till spring.

The shed thread was to show the steps and construction of the shed for those thinking of doing the same thing, similar to previous threads. If this is not wanted I will be happy to blow away the pics and not post more.

Don't even think about removing anything from that post. It is valuable information. I plan on building a workshed this spring. Perhaps I will be able to use the info you posted. Of course here in South Carolina we have a little more agreeable weather between now & May. I won't have the time pressures you had building your shed. Our curse is the summertime 100 degree heat.

BTW, good site for building plans you posted in that thread. I am in the middle of building a gazebo and bought some plans from there. I didn't end up using the plans but some I got off of Black & Decker's project page. But it did give me some ideas. They were pretty good plans.

Hmm, I guess the humor I intended in my post wasn't as apparent as I had thought it would be. I'm sorry if my post came accross as a rant Greg, is was never meant to. I followed your thread about winter coming and never found it inappropriate. If I had I would have handled it the same way I handle all problems I have with people I see in person, and that is one on one and not in a public arena. Again, I apologize if my attempt at humor came accross as an attack on your thread.

Your post clearly states that your shed is a place to store stuff, but you are slipping back to the boat thing. I replied in a sick sense of humor that the addiction seems to keep coming back as its always the case. We are addicted each and every hour, either buying plans and thinking about our next projects. My wife looks at me sometimes and asks me why I only think about boats, even when laying this new floor of mine down this last two weeks, all that beautiful honduras mahogany planks, vertical grains or quarter sawn stuff, all lucious and brightly finished, What could I be doing with this stuff?? Now where were we..... No problem, outtahere.

I tried a new strategy on my wife. Told her I was dumping all the boats and getting an RV so we could travel more and visit family and friends.

Dang woman is too smart for me and saw right through my plot to spend the winters on a warm coast working at local boat yards, fishing, and generaly enjoying myself way too much, while she stayed up north working and watching over the boys while they are in school.

I countered with, "I will take the boys with me and home school them". I bet you could hear that woman's SNORT at that point.

Last year I tried a similar line of floating down the Mississippi with the boys, then sailing across the Gulf, then up the East Coast and back into the Lakes and home. I think it would have been more educational than school is for the boys........

Greg - I read your posts about the shed, understood your humor, and agree that they are definitely appropriate for this forum. Sailors need to support their addiction any way they can. Even the occasional philosophy topic is appropriate when it has to do with maintaining our addiction.

Greg I have enjoyed reading every post about your shed and I hope you will continue to post about its contents even after the shed is done

Despite the communication hiccup I think this storage/boat shed topic is a good example of why we don't try too hard to keep "off-topic" posts away from this forum. It seems like it is inevitable that when somebody posts something that is "off-topic" the conversation eventually turns to boats so there really is no "off topic" for those of us who are afflicted.

An example would be grandkid photos (yes, please post them) - something along the lines of:

"Here's my new grandson."

"Congrats! Did you build a cradle for him?"

"Yeah I built the one on this website."

"Hey, did you see the pram plans they offer on that site too?"

"I sure did - that's the next project."

- Yep, no matter how hard we try to get off topic we're always going to get around to boats... Hee hee. :wink:

I am surpised that any of the tounge in cheek attempts at humour was taken as serious criticsm of Greg's topic on 'Sheds'. Why down under it is every boy's dream to have a shed. We even have a songs about 'A Man Must Have a Shed" and publish Coffee Table books about Aussies and Their Sheds. A shed is a man's private place, a spot where he can sit and contemplate the next project while he sips on a cold beer and also the ladies appreciate the shed as well because it keeps us from being under their feet all the time.

A thread on sheds is as appropriate to a forum on boats as boats are to water.

I may build another one on down the ravine hill, over looking the creek just for a place more out of sight and a good place for the men to be men .

I've been watching the next door neighbor build a shed lately. It's all I can do not to jump in there and give "pointers"

His shed looks as though it is going to be a nice one - It's just not the one I'd build for ME. Funny how envy can get a guy going, eh?
