adla Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 hehehehe...launch went well..i will share more soon...but this is about where i couldn't steer because the rudder popped up and i forgot to put it down again after i went ashore and picked up my brother....and the wind wanted us to go thAT WAY......it was fun and then i let go of the main and turned upwind....no dipping the rail for me AND yes, my bumpers are still on, but ya'll should have seen me come back and slam the dock....goOod thing this gal was kevlared: Quote
capt jake Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 Looks like some good wind in those sails. Deceiving as the water doesn't look like it was winding enough to fill them as the picture shows. This is a really neat thing! You look very intent upon you sailing. 8) I know that I have the very same look most of the time. Waiting for your additional chapters to the story! :) Quote
adla Posted September 19, 2005 Author Posted September 19, 2005 well...this might be an indication of the weirdness of the desert lakes....we had NO wind at all in the morning...and then it was spotty...when i get a second i will post pics of Steve Down's boat and Rolands, etc....but the wind was off and on and where it wanted to be. at that moment we were sailing...quite soon after i let go of the wheel because it was a bit much for me. Steve's boat is fast! and salty. Roland's s faster too...my lines were outta whack...it was all i could do to launch...sailing will be something i learn. Phil was with us in the morning...but there was no wind then. i loved seeing the Aloha in person. These boats are fun.... a. Quote
capt jake Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 So, what was there, 4 Weekenders there? That sounds like a great time. Winds are always fickle it seems. I recently took my mother out and the wind went from nothing to blowing hard in about 10 minutes. Not enough time to reef an her and my stepdad hadn't learned what was what yet (if you know what I mean?). You will get the bugs worked out and it will become easier. Just don't go out in a real blow too early on, it might scare the puddin' out of ya. My second time out we reefed right out of the barn. The third time was a small craft asvosory. They post those for a reason.  Awaiting those pictures!! Quote
Greg Luckett Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 WOWOWOW  Alda, I did not realize you had finished your boat and splashed. CONGRATULATIONS!!! Quote
Steve Day Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 Adla, You have a fine looking boat there! To have it float and sail the first time out must feel really great. It is great that you gave us an action shot of her. Now, learn how to sail her at your pace. Taking someone knowledgable with you for the first few times will hasten the process, but you can get it by yourself, too. I know you will enjoy the boat and she will always bring onlookers at the ramp/dock. Your craftsmanship will bring them in and there is something about those little boats that attracts people. Great job! Steve Quote
adla Posted September 19, 2005 Author Posted September 19, 2005 gosh thanks....here is another "action shot" : my "SHE FLOATS" celebration....that is mini me, Phil Gowans, and Steve Downs in the background! sigh....a little coors light and "got 'er done" amounted to my ceremony....i peeeshaw pomp and circumstance.... i don't think the weekender is tippy at all.....we were hoppin' all about her....no problem. Steve - this is a shot of me tryin' to figure it out...i am not a super risk taker...(ignore the boat building project)....i don't have an experienced sailer around that doesn't want to dip the rail (my brother) so, i jumped out there and doused the sail when it was too much...i'll get it. and at my pace. whoa...sails are causing the boat to move  a. Barry Pyeatt Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 HIP, HIP, HORRAY! Adla had a launch today. What a great occasion. Morgaine looks great on the water. Beautiful picture it makes there girl. Bet it was fun to have all the other Weekenders there too. From the looks of things you will do fine. Yes, it helps to have the rudder in the water. Makes things a lot easier to control. Rather than dropping the mainsail, you can just drop the peak halyard. That will depower the main instantly and slow things down quite a bit for you. Makes approaching a dock easier too. You will pick up on the basics fairly quickly, the rest can take a lifetime and still leave you wanting to learn more. Always better if you have someone else with you. Even a (brother) that is anxious to get the rail in the water. If they have some good experience behind them it will help. But it is your boat now Captain. You are the master of this vessel. Helps to work upwind first, then come back downwind. You will learn more and gain confidence more easily. Just don't try to run directly downwind at first. You won't have the understanding of your control quite yet. Going upwind you can always turn into the wind and let it stall and only tighten up a bit on the main until you get more familiar with it. Thanks for keeping us posted. Quote
Dave R1 Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 Congratulations on the launch. Morgaine looks great! You'll get the hang of everything soon enough. We got out Saturday morning and I was thinking about your launch. Looks like you had a good time. Quote
adla Posted September 19, 2005 Author Posted September 19, 2005 Thanks Dave !!! i am sure i will get the hang of it...infact just being on the water with some wind enlightened me as to a few rigging ideas and clarifications. Having never sailed before i was not clear about some things. The Jib and main will get some more pulleys...lead blocks and some cleats before i go out again...but here she is in light wind: i think she sat in the water real cute...but that is because i built her...notice the grin! i'll get her brightwork cleaned up...but the paint and non-skid really held up....i am thrilled with the boat! a. Guest Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 I guess you now know that words will not do justice to describe the feeling that is generated as these projects reach fruition. Nice work, and like you I am still learning the ropes of small boat sailing. Don't be a stranger like some of the other folks, including other like builders such as Jan and Johanna. They, too, added a lot of life around here with their banter and project. Way too 8) !!!!! Quote
Stump Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 Super Work adla. Looks like you had a great launching!!! beautiful boat. As Oyster said, don't forget to stop in with your thoughts, ideas, modifications and adventures. Yes, I've "finished" my boat but I haven't stopped working on it. Much less learning how to sail her. 8) Quote
adla Posted September 20, 2005 Author Posted September 20, 2005 Geez- i feel like u guys just had a funeral for me!!! i am not going anywhere...i was always lurking even when i had school work up to my eyeballs. i am just happy to be among the sailors and not a builder anymore!!!!! Oyster is right...there are no words to describe the transition from boat building to sailing... i got hit several times with pretty large wakes (prior to turning her nose into them) and never took on any water...she just *bumped* forward...she felt sollid and stable on the water....i'm happy. a. Barry Pyeatt Posted September 20, 2005 Posted September 20, 2005 Personally, I feel that the party is just getting going. 8) And we are having a bunch of great new friends join us. Geez, now I'm getting excited too. Quote

Phil Gowans Posted September 20, 2005 Posted September 20, 2005 Yes, there were 4! I missed the wind, but here's a picture, while we were waiting. You see here: (L to R) Black Falcon, Morgaine, Aloha, Maiden Nevada. Pretty exciting for me! Quote
ChrisObee Posted September 20, 2005 Posted September 20, 2005 Looks like a pirate fleet just in to pillage a town. except for the jet ski  Quote
