Hi there,

I'm planning to build an S11N in the Philippines. however, boat building and recreational sailing is not really that popular here. and finding the right materials for building boats can be very difficult. but I was able to find sources of marine epoxy, fiber glass cloth, epoxy resin and marine grade plywood here is very cheap.

I'd like to know what other materials would I need to build a proper Spindrift, deck equipment etc... and where can I source them. before I commit to buying the plans. I don't mind importing some stuff overseas, but i'd like to be able to source or fabricate most of what I need locally, as shipping can be very expensive (tight budget).

This would be my first time to build anything, and i've never sailed before, just to let you know what my perspective is. :D

Thanks for any help.

Cheers,

Roy E.

First off, let me welcome you to this site. I will suggest that all members check out your personal website. His site is very interesting and a nice treat for a bit of off time looking. Next, you have the full advantage of mahogany in your area, I have never built the boat, but I do believe that it will meet your needs for just about anything called for in solid woods. You can finish it clear or paint it. You will need to seek the proper grain patterns .

Thanks for the warm welcome Oyster. we do have plentiful supply of very nice hardwoods here and i'm looking forward to finishing a boat with some narra. my primary concern is the metal and plastic parts that that I know are not available here, like gudgeons, pulley blocks etc.. can those things be easily fabricated? or are there alternatives available from the nearest home depot or hardware store?

Thanks for visiting my website btw.

Well, If tthe designer does not answer this question, just drop him an e-mail that is listed on his website. You will find that he comes around here a couple times a day, and answers inquiries on a pretty regualr basis. I will contact him this morning and alert him to your request, since he happens to be across the creek, so to speak, from me. This site is kinda quiet, as most folks build and go use their boats pretty frequently as as rule here right now. Will you be using your boat for mucking about, or for a larger hull tender?

This would be my first boat. I guess it would primarily be used for "mucking about". but my ultimate objective is to build something bigger. a 20 to 25' camp cruiser that I can use for island hopping to any of the Philippines 7000+ islands :D

I'm planning to build a dinghy first to hone my boat building and sailing skills. I think the S11N is perfect as it's just the right size to take my family out on and fits nicely inside an AUV (Asian Utility Vehicle) when nested.

Is there a link to his website that I am missing somewhere?

Thanks,
