Hello! My name is Ulysses Stockdale. I've been keeping up with this forum for about a year. I finaly joined about a month back. I was going to keep this secret until launch day, but I figured you might like to have something to talk about........ok I guess I just can't keep a secret

I decided to take the weekender to it's most extreme. I'm modeling it after a certain vessel..... See if you can guess which one. :wink:

Too cool!! Its a viking ship right? I wish I had thought of that Great scroll work did you do all of that? After thinking about it, it looks more like an 18th century pirate ship. Like something from pirates of the caribean is that what you were going for?? Will it have 1 or 2 masts and what kind of sails? Hope to hear soon! Hey your here in Idaho maybe we should hook up and share ideas?

Ulysses, that is amazing. Very nice work. Are you planning on square rigging? How many masts? I'm thinking a modification to the stem is going to be needed so you can mount a figurehead out there. What about the stern lights? Will you be cutting out the openings and installing glass (Plexiglas)? And what about the gun deck? How many guns? What weight of metal will she throw?

I'm going to guess HMS Surprise. Howzat?

I think it is one of "Lucky" Captain Jack Aubrey's ships! :shock: But it could be the Bounty, ya I go with the Bounty! Than again what was the name of the ship Captain Hook had in Peter Pan, I didn't see that movie but I remember the ads for it.

Great work, please keep us updated. Where in Boise do you sail? I've been through there several times but don't remember lakes near by.

I've got all of you stumped! All good guesses. But not quite. it's not a "historical" ship. Think "junk". The ship that was used to portray this non-historical ship was a junk. Next hint this evening.

I'm going to rig it as a brig with square sails. And yes I'm going to install black powder cannons in the gun ports.

Well, gotta run and do some more work on her!

Very cool looking but top heavy too. I agree with Ray and Stump about the center of gravity being raised to an unsafe level unless you are adding a lot of ballast. Could you add lead sheeting to the keel below the hull maybe?

There is a familiar air to those grand lines. Because of kids at my house we see lots of videos, so I'm guessing the portrayed craft might be Captain Hooks immortal ship.

First let me lay everyones fears to rest. The boat will be properly ballested. We have completely thought this aspect through. And in all reality I haven't added that much extra weight over the regular design. the walls of the cabin were simply pushed to the edge of the boat. And what you see on the back is built up from very thin wood. As far as the masts, those will be birds mouth. True there will be more weight than the regular version, but the proper amount and placement of ballast will solve that issue. The gaff will be almost half the size of the standard so the issue of tipping will be greatly reduced.

Now for the next clues.... look up Nakalay Junk. Her captain lost his scalp.

Tell us about the cannons

Now lets talk about the fun part, the cannons! Arggg! :pirate: we've already built 2 prototypes. Basically they will be 1/4 inch thick walled iron pipe with about a 3/4 inch bore. Or whatever size that comes close at the local scrap yard. once the barrels are welded up then they are slid into oak sleeves that are turned on a lathe to look like proper cannons. Once thats done just tap the back of the barrel through the wood and into the steel. Screw in a garden variety percussion cap nipple, mount on ready made carriage, and your done.

Of course I won't be actualy fire any shot out of them. But MAN they howl! :shock: (proper application of earplugs is highly recomended. They jump back about 3 feet when they go off! I'll be fixing them to the inside of the gun ports VERY securely. Each cannon will only measure 12 inches in length.

VERY COOL!!! :shock: Can you estimate yet how the recoil with effect the "ship". How much of a push to the side do you think there will be? Do you think it will be enough to change your direction of sail? i.e. actually push you sideways through the water?

I'm beginning to get the feeling of a road trip coming when you get completed! I gotta see this!! 8) After all, Bosie isn't that far from Seattle.

I don't think the blast will affect it at all. Now perhaps if all of one side is set off at one time..... These cannons don't weigh very much, so I cant see that they would put that much strain on the "ship". But Holy Monkey it will look cool!
