  1. Great posts, thanks for sharing. I am inching along on a OB20 build as my first ever project. One question I have is when I am ready to cover the hull with fiberglass, should I first apply a coat of epoxy to the hull, allow it to get tacky, then lay the cloth and apply more epoxy; or keep the hull clean lay the fiberglass then apply epoxy? It's a rookie question I'm sure, but it seems to me if epoxy is first applied the cloth will be difficult to lay smooth. Greg
  2. Hello, So I've made some progress! I had to carve out some time, but I determined to find a full weekend to work. My health is 80% so that's good! Now I fi nd that my big challenge is to get past the mistakes I make and discover only too late to completely correct. My goal is to get a boat in the water and pray that is behaves like a proper boat should. I also had a challenge in getting my photos loaded onto my computer and then this forum. Seem my hard drive is failing, and so is the one on my computer! I'll see my doctor about the first issue.
  3. Just a note...health issues struck. Project on hold but not abandoned. I would have to answer too many questions by my son in law if II were to give up! updates as possible.
  4. Treywil, I am a first time builder working on an Other Banks 20. Tonight I was scrolling through discussions trying to get paint tips. Would you mind providing some details on the paint/technique/colors you used. I see the photo you posted on March14 which looks great. Thanks, Greg
  5. Yes that is what I meant, the B&B mix. So that is good, I will use the resin/hardener mix on these panels that are new, clean and lay flat on each other, and add the mix for the finger joints. I'm not clear about...."Just use cabosil to thicken the epoxy for other gluing jobs"...so I would purchase cabosil also and add it to the resin/hardener mix for maybe small points of contact that I am gluing? Thanks, Again
  6. As I begin to assemble parts of my build I have questions about the use of epoxy I hope to get help on. When I am joining flat surfaces of plywood to each other can they be glued with mixed resin and hardener, or must the mix always be combined with wood flour? I have the B&B resin, hardener and mix. I know the wood will absorb a portion of the epoxy and I should avoid having a dry joint by wetting each surface. I am questioning when I can use just epoxy and when I should be mixing the epoxy with the wood flour. I have not used any of this before so don't hesitate to "school" me ! What about finger joints, same general question here too?
  7. Hello JP6210... Where can I locate the "Red Hawk" system? Cheaper is my price range! Thanks

    I got it now...
  9. Got it thanks...here is a pile of a boat Hull # 44 Outer Banks 20...my son in law took a look and said "that is a boat?" ha
  10. I made the trip to Bayboro, NC this past Saturday to pick up my Outer Banks 20 kit, hull #44. It was five hours each way and a couple hours at the shop with Graham and Alan. I am very please with the kit. The precision of the cuts is excellent. Alot of thought was put into the marking each part and I also received some great advice. All in all I couldn't be more satisfied. I thought I would include a photo of the pile of parts. But I don't see any link to add a photo. I have never made anything as large as a bird house. I would recommend this kit to any other fool like me who thinks they can plunge into something they know nothing about !

Hello, I cannot get an "Attach Files" paper clip on my forum post...any suggestions? I do, however see the paper clip on this page! My Post is " Outer Banks 20...build" Thanks, Greg
  12. I start this boat soon. Any more progress on your build? Please continue to post photos if you are ready to share.
  13. Thanks for posting the photos. I will be starting a build soon so keep them coming! Photos are a great help in the process. Your work looks to be excellent.
  14. JP Thanks for the welcome. I will post photos of my build. I'm waiting to hear back that the jig kit is ready, possibly a few weeks. Maybe we will be building around the same time. I am very please with my choice, I think Graham designed a fantastic boat in the OB20. It ticks off most of my desired features: easy launch/retrieve, cabin for overnight, family (read grandchildren) friendly, manageable length, economical motor, seaworthiness, seating, hardtop, swim platform, not too long, good looker! Chick, thanks for the encouragement. I was just starting a Devlin design that is also great (the Pelicano 18), but changed to the OB20 because of some design factors that suit me better. I think the April messabout is doable for me. I drove up to the lake one day just to check it out. Id like to be on the water there, looks fantastic. Striperick, I have been looking at the photos of your build...and taking notes!! I think the photos are great viewing and will be invaluable when I begin. I have a good sized detached garage but with a normal door height. It just came to mind that I will probably need to do the cabin and pilot house outside the garage! Anyone have an approximate height when building the pilot house?
  15. Hello Chick...Hendersonville is a great area. I am originally from Ohio but moved to Winston Salem in 1982. My wife and I like it in NC alot and now my grandchildren are here, daughter and son in law in Mint Hill and my son in Charleston. I have seen your boat in photos. It sold me on the build! I have probably bitten off more than I can chew! Carla did tell me they have an OB20 but she didn't mention it had been yours. Great work, I hope I come close to it! This is a really a first for me. Thanks for the offer of help and a visit. We have some very good "hole in the wall" eateries. Or when I get stuck, we have a bunk bed that the kids aren't always using, so you can spend the weekend, LOL. If I haven't sold my 17'Siren by then, the April messabout sounds like fun. Please let me know if dates get set, Ill get some time off. I'll keep the motor in mind...I am currently sending Carla and Graham all my $, !! But its nice to know you think I will actually need a motor some day!!
  16. I just got off the cell phone having ordered a Jig Kit for the Outer Banks 20. So I just had to tell someone! This is a first build for me, so I will welcome any and all advice as this project begins. I need to wait for Graham to let me know when the kit is available for pick up. I live in Charlotte NC so the drive will be easy. I am very pleased with the look and what I imagine the "feel" of this boat will be. I have a 17' Siren sailboat and always sailed as a preference in the past. I want a power boat now for use with the grandchildren. If you have built this or a similar B&B boat please share any starting pointers. If you have a photo library of your build and would share it that would be a great help. Greg
  17. Steve, I am still trying to pull the trigger on a first time build. I have no doubt that the CS20Mk3 is my best choice. But as first timer I have a couple nagging doubts about my potential success. Seeing your newly launched project I thought you may have had similar pre-decision questions! What do you think will be the length of time for your build? I know this is all subjective and based on other time commitments, but I will be a part timer too. I do not have young children, but my wife likes to see me occasionally and I work full time! The other concern I have is parts of the build. I am most concerned about building the centerboard. I think that may require the most skill and if lead is involved beyond my ability. Thanks for any insights you are willing to share.
  18. Another quick question. My wife and I will attend for our first time. We will be there for Saturday afternoon and evening. We have two, polite but active Golden Retrievers. Would we be able to have the dogs with us at the event? They can stay in the pick up bed, but will want to swim and run. Comments? Thanks, Greg
  19. I too hope all goes well for you and yours.
  20. Hello, I am looking for a source to purchase lead. Any suggestions? Thanks
  21. I am so looking forward to building, I have sketches of the BH19 I go over and over. Anyone who has a BH19, if photos are not already available in the forum, could you please post? If they are somewhere in older posts any links will be appreciated. I am waiting, hoping that Graham will get to a kit for the BH19. I want to build, but I am also aware that this will be a big challenge for a first build. I am anxious to get started because the goal is to get on the water! I must say this forum is great and I have learned so much already. But its time for me to get moving with a project !!!
  22. Count? I remember a grey submarine about 10" long. If memory serves that was THE most exciting boat I have ever owned. It was a bathtub toy and I was very young. It had a mechanism to make it descend and surface. It had torpedo's that fired and a deck gun that swiveled. You could see every rivet that held it together. And the periscope come up from the tower. Maintenance was extremely low and no rivals ever bested her. Sure, you could not overnight but you could imagine fierce battles and distant shores. No better vessel ever sail a porcelain tub. Never be too quick to "count" until the counting's done!
  23. Rick, As I mentioned I am new to the forum and new to the idea of building. I have owned the O'day Mariner and Widgeon, the Hunter 25 and a 10" no name small dingy. I have been looking for a boat and settled on the B19. Then I noticed the new offerings of the CS17&20 MKIII. Graham made a couple of comments to me on the differences, one being the use of the BH19 as a proper "small cruiser" for a small family. I know the choice will be mostly based on intended usage. I am 60+ and will do a lot of solo sailing, some for long weekends. However I also want to take the grand children at times. I thought with your experience with theBH19, you may be willing to offer your thoughts on the differences/advantages you might imagine in the building/use of these two boats. Any ideas are welcome. And thanks. Greg
