LernnieG I started to paint my hull I am using allgrip 545 primer.I sanded the hull after I glassed it then I had to let it sit since I went back to power plant we worked 7x12 and they were painting the whole place with ppg epoxy primer and polyester paint. but back to the boat. I washed the hull of with water and let it dry over night then painter with a roller some places I went over it twice or so. It was cool do not know the temp but well above freezing. let it sit over night next day after lunch it was still soft. I sanded it and there was not a lot of dust some chips came of. Call Jamestown tech service there answer there was blush it was to cold and to thick. I sanded today and it was hard lots of dust and few places it may have not stuck due to blush since I did not wash with hot water and or soap. It looked live you boat in a previoous pic. I am going to try again when we have two higher temp days lice sat ot sun. I need to get it painter at least primed before I turn her over and start on inside. Have to go to WY latter next week daughter ois having operation wife to take care of kids I will come back about the 15 th then have to go back to work for a couple months on another power plant project. any suggestions The paint they used on the plant was 450H polyethanue 4 to one and the primer was 2/400 fast dry and the cure as 2 fast dry it was real thick and went on thick color was gray and a buff tan Thanks Mcdermitt

I think this is a great. I for one need to find a way to get out of weather when the time comes I have not been able to do much on boat in last few weeks because of work (7x12) for about 7 weeks. off till end of Jan then (6x10). I have started painting the bottom with allgrip primer as soon as finished I will flip it and start on inside most has been cut and fitted painted with clear epoxy 2 coats at least LET SEE SOME PIC AND DETAILS Thanks McDermitt

Alan on the cs-17 how does the hull shape change in comparison to the mark-3 can the cabin on the mark-3 be adapted to fit the cs-17. I want to build a cab on the one I am building but do not know where to start. I want to have a tunnel like the 20. do not need much headroom just enouph to sit up or lounge 6 foot or so of sleeping room just to get out of weather and rain couple windows for vent. access to drop; and retrieve ancor sait on a tabinacel. boat will be used mostly in rivers six to ten day trips by self

Scott Where did you start and how far are you going. I want to do a river trip. How much of it could or did you do by sail. I figure I would have to do it all by motor except where I may go across a lack between locks. I am planning or a cs-17 with some sort of cab since I am looking at a long trip down the Missouri river. Was barge traffic a problem? Thanks

is there a set of drawing for the mark-3 yet. I know there is a difference but I want to put a cab on the cs-17 I am building. I have the hull turned over and have the bottom glassed and will not do any more on it until it is painter. I may be a while if the weather stays cold. Once I turn it over I want to finish it. I have put three coats of epoxy on all the under sides of the beck and seat pieces all the structural pieces fir the mast and bow parts were fitted and epox before I turned it. I want this boat for river travel with a outboard not so much sailing. I want the cab to be able to get out of rain and wind as I go I plan on being on the river several days at a time. If I need to sleep I figure I will tie up to the bank and pitch a tent I have no idea how where to start or how long I can make the cab. I have thought of cutting part of the forward bulkhead out but do not know if that is sound or how high I can make it sitting is not a great issue I can always slouch down Thanks for any suggestions

chick I would like them to do the same for a cs-17 where you had more of a cab to get out of weather on long trips do worrying about sleeping and all just have a place to get in out of rain and cold wind My thing is going to be more river trips where you can tie up to bank or a dock some where. My first trip with the one I am building will be from Columbus Ga. to the gulf

LennieG I am going to paint every thing inside the boat after a couple three coats of epoxy In fact I have coated all the deck pieces on the under side a long time ago I just set them out mixed some stuff and rolled them I have taken all the braces knees and done them all the pieces that fit on the bow that support the deck or forward mast. When I had long strips of glass to wet in the hull I took a plastic box lid and wet them in it put in boat and pulled it out as I put it on inside hull You get done before summer. McDermitt

I am building a cs-17 nd have the epoxy and glass from Graham I am going to use awlgrip 545 for a primer. I have sanded the hull and filled all the low spots where the scarf joints are and all the holes from screws. I feels real smooth to the feel. I used a longboard that they use in body shops. I used epoxy thickened and loots of micro baloons in the mix I used to do the fairing. I used 50 grit paper in the longboard I think it was 15 inches long. It did not take a lot to smooth it down. I am not going to look for a show boat but I want it to look good and last a good while. I would do half one day and the other the next. So you went all the way from the top of transom all the way to the top of the bow

been a while since I read it the post started of with a list of every thing you need to have on hand before you start every thing you needed then there was a part about rolling the glass out and marking on the hull and the glass index marks so it stayed in place and did not move when you start. and cut some places in it for the bow portion. then there was a part about starting to put the epoxy on the hull and let the glass wet itself that way before you poured and on. them not sure brush roll it on then squege the excess and then move on to the next section rolling out more cloth that is all I can recall. I was wondering it you do bottom and side all at the same time. it seems as if the epoxy on the side would just run off or do you use thickened epoxy. about how much epoxy does it take to do the bottom and side. how long do you think it would take if all the ducks are lined up it will be a while before I can start but I think I will do it in the late afternoon and evening so it does not kick off while I am doing it it will be a one man show I think. my one grand son goes to school in the afternoon and the other thinks he is in love I think.

I read a reply on the forum about doing the hull it was rather long but very informative. the writer said some thing about rolling the glass out cutting it and marking where it when before you mix any epoxy and on and on I can not find it maybe some one can put me on to it. I was ready to start and they called me to have my rotator cuff operated on and I lost where I was. Now I am starting to get things started again in the next few weeks.

strange question do you glass the hull first or paint before you glass. second after you do first glass coat before you go any farther I understand you wash to remove blush then sand and put on more epox then do paint or do you do it the other way. how many coats of epox do you do. On the inside I never washed with water I allways sanded them used alcohol do wipe up the dust before I applied another coat of epox

Well I got it turned over this morning My son and 4 Grandkids shower up early this morning. LETS DO IT well we did took about 10 min. or less they just got hold and flipped it. I have looked it over I do not see any dips or low places. On one side the scarf jointed failed to some degree It pulled oven a little on the outside but not on the inside. I will fair this about 6 inches out I guess. I tool a rule and layed it over the spot and it touched the hull out about 6 inches or so from the chine to the center . I took a block plane and when a;; along the chime hitting the gear teeth to make sure they did not protrude over the side or hull then broke the edge at about 45 degrees. Next I will fill all the areas around the gear teeth with thickened epox there is a spot on each one where there is a small oven area.and fill in the center line where there are some spots where it did not fill Am I doing right Thanks McDermitt

I talked with Graham this afternoon. Carla is back in the hospital with what ever the infection is she has. It is making it rouph on Graham. You can tell in his voice he is worried about his wife. He is a awfully good man to help us build our boats and take time to talk to us. We need to pray for him as well as Carla. When ever I go work in the boat I just stop and pray for both of them and I can not wait till I hear she is home and on the mend Stop for a moment and pray for both of them I DO NOT THINK GRAHAM WANT TO BURDEN US WITH HIS TROUBLES BUT WHAT ARE FRIEND AND CO-WORKERS FOR. thanks for the pic. My aft bulkhead has a cut out in it so I could not do exactly as you did. I was thinking of cutting down to a couple inches above the keel batten and putting in a stiffener and a piece of plywood to make a flat floor just a idea. I do not know how wide I would make the pasageway

Peter How did you change it. I would not want to cut the whole aft bulkhead out. I think it adds strength. If I cut it out it would only be enouph to have walking access. I am just thinking about what I could dodo you have a pic. I am going to try and get one of the grandkids to see if they can put some on for me McDermitt

I was wondering the good and bad of open vs closed. I plan on using a outboard on my boat a good bit since there will be a lot of river travel could be all day. I am building the cs-17 now and have a closed cockpit kit with the rear bulkhead in ready to turn her over and start on the bottom then go back and finish the seats and deck when I turn her back over latter in the year hope to use her this spring. Has any one changed in the middle of the stream and if what did you do . .motor size and is still up in the air Thanks Floyd McDermitt

Well I tacked the center board trunk into the boat. I do not know how well it will it will be in the end. When I put the keel batten in I do not know how well it was done It was hot and I had to do it by myself no help and the epox wanted to set before I really had it where I wanted it ..I did not get it screwed to the hull but I had plenty of epox under it. It run out around the edges. The center board trunk looks sq and true down the center but there was some space between the keel batten and the side of the trunk. I will fill ity with epox and add a 1x4 over the batten to give support to the trunk. The question when I put the front seat piece in the cover for the center board trunk seemed to go a long ways down the center board trunk will part of it have to be cut off seems real long and will be in the way of the center board when it is down I wanter to flip it as soon as I got the center board trunk in but the kids all went to Fla to the beach Thanks
