The last time I made one of those, I toyed with several hold down options and elected to go with a little clip.

I used a shock cord in a hem and had gaps at the locations of these clips. The clips were mounted with the curve facing up along the bottom of the combing. No moving parts to break or rust, no springs, just toss the dodger edge over the combing and pull it around. Most of the time they engaged just by tensioning.

Thanks Oyster,

Looks great, I like the setup. I thought about a very similar setup but was trying to avoid any hardware on the cockpit interior.

Very clean and simple, just the way it should be on a small boat.

Thanks for your comments also PAR,

I am a fresh water sailor, greatlakes, so hardware failure is not a big issue here. I like the idea of the hammock clip and am toying with the idea for a cockpit cover on my canvas canoe, where the hook is up under the gunwale.

I'm using these as you describe on my boat. The work, but you have to be careful, especially when the dodger is removed. They have the potential to puncture the crap out of bare feet, so be careful. Also I will not fly my mizzen staysail without the dodger installed because of the snag and tear potential. (For this reason I removed the cleats from this area as well.)

If people do go with snaps keep in mind they need maintenance.  A touch of white grease, or petroleum jelly each season goes a long way.  Epoxy syringes work great for this, along with a Q-tip.

I gave up on snaps long ago. I use "twist studs" on covers. There's a few different styles, a lighter weight version that's a simple screw in deal.

or a heavier duty puppy, that has two screws to hold it's ass down.

They do need a special grommet, but they seem to work longer than snaps.

Then there's this baby,

I'm picturing a screw holding it down to the deck or combing.. They're call tarp clips and are about a buck each.

Mini update,

Here is where I am this morning,. Fabric cut edge banding on the free edges and hardware hem in place at the coaming. This morning I hope to get the fabric tubes in place that will house the pipe hoop and then mount the whole thing on the boat. If it fits I will layout snaps if it doesn't I will take a nap and start again next weekend. My sewing machine is struggling and my stitch work is not my finest but I think she will be fine.
