There was a full sized video game machine, disassembled bicycle suspension fork, and a shaving horse in my front room when we met. My drafting table was bigger than my dining table. I had wood drying in my closet. Seven bikes, 3 dozen chisels, and one pair of shoes. For some reason she stayed. I think I amuse her... 1 Quote

That's what I did, I don't think I ever asked my husband if I could build one, I just started and now I have bought plans for a 2nd project. Hmm maybe I am a bad wife and should have asked lol.... Action Tiger are you the one building 3 Kayaks in your living room? I showed my husband that and I was quickly told that would not be happening here! Instead I am outside in Winter building my boats, lucky it doesn't get too cold here. Our very large shed is too full of cars (Morris Mini's) to make room for me, lucky I also like cars Jeff, it looks easy because it pretty much is Lisa. Quote

I built a Curlew, really enjoyed the build, but I've only had it in the water once. Hurt my back so bad, I had to be lifted out of it. I have an unfinished little 12' sail boat in my garage that I started 9 years ago. I hate sanding epoxy.... I loved building the Curlew, I love building and she grumbles a little, but I do it anyway. I've built all kinds of things, probably nothing really useful but I have a wide range of woodworking interesting. I built a hand crank organ, who need that!!? Currently building a couple koleidoscopes. Her problem is why do I need to build another boat, I have 2 already, well one and a half. Quote

Jeff, I have some 5/16" timber here by 1 5/8", I was planning to run as floor boards like in your blog 'Stonefly's everywhere', but a friend just told me it is too thin and it will break. Do you have any suggestions as to whether that is too thin. I know it will flex, but didn't think it would break, but I could be wrong.... Quote
Kudzu Posted June 20, 2014 Posted June 20, 2014 It is thin, but it depends on the wood too. I would put some scrap wood, spaced like the frames on the ground and lay the strips across them and see what happens. If it survives that it should be fine. Rarely will you put all your weight in one small place when paddling. Just getting in or out most likely. Quote

The Bow was supposed to be bigger, but I dropped it yesterday and broke the timber so I decided to be lazy and make it smaller instead of trying to fix it. Must say I wish I had gone to the effort and fixed it, but happy with the end result. Quote

So he managed to make room in the shed for my canoe, in amongst his precious cars. Although I am under strict instructions not to work on it in the shed as I tend to be a bit messy with the saw dust.. Quote

lisian Posted July 1, 2014 Author Posted July 1, 2014 Hi, have been getting a few things done on the canoe, but it is school holidays here in Australia so my time is a little more limited. I have spent hours lashing on floor boards as I decided to do thin ones and well I must admit that, that was the only tedious part I found through the whole build. I have finished building the frame today, just put on the 2nd thwart and turned her over to varnish. I hope on the weekend to be ready to skin it I can't wait!!!! I plan on doing something a little different at the front with the cloth and where the rub rail will start because of the way I have shaped the breasthook. So if it doesn't go according to plan you may hear me swear from all the way over there lol. Some pics of it today. And one upside down. I will try and get a FROG photo tomorrow, I am assuming that means 'Frame resting on the grass' or something? I have seen in mentioned. Cheers, Lisa. Oh and as for a name.... Kudzu Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 I had to reskin my Stonefly because of a puppy chewing on it. Gnawed right the skin at the bow! I could turn it so it didn't show for the boat shows, but I finally gave in and reskinned it. Need to get it on the water and get some Re-launching photos. Quote
