woodman Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 I have been looking at this kayak for quite some time now...I was going to make it a cedar stripper..but not now.. Using one of my many kayak-canoe building books I have had for a couple years I decided to convert the Chesapeake 16 to a Skin-On-Frame.... I had a couple of 4X8 sheets of cardboard and some 1/4'' ply scraps to make the paterns.... Using Jeffs book and prior builds I came up with frame spacing. I laid out each frame by.... In order to get an idea of the rocker in the hull I positioned the boat on my strong back and shimmed up each end until the center of the hull was the only part touching the strong back and measured the distance of the gap at each point where the frame brackets will be located. I have one cedar beam left over that was given to me, 4''X6'' 11 foot long . The other 3 I used last year to make a couple of boats... 1 Quote

It was mostly clear readwood that he had gotten from a hugh old water storage tank the company he worked for was removing from their property. Beautiful stuff, and wasn't ablet to talk him out of some... I like your boats. Want to build a strip built boat someday, but I hate sanding epoxy/fiberglass. Guess if I was good at applying it I wouldn't have to do as much sanding. Quote

I can't compare because I have only done one boat, but I really liked sewing with the sinew. I bought some breaded fishing line I was going to use, but it was so fine, I just didn't think I would like using it so I went with the sinew and really liked the look. I see all your boats hanging above and have to laugh. I want to build another kayak, and my wife just doesn't understand! "What do you need more than one for?", she asks. I have been toying around with a similar idea for a while. Considering a U-channel of some type of wood. I would have to make a piece to go over and around the bow, and not so sure that would look good. And since it would then become part of the bow entry shape of the boat it may effect performance. I think it could look great on a boat with a really sharp bow that has no stitching on the stem. Still thinking............... Quote

woodman Posted April 15, 2012 Author Posted April 15, 2012 How it apears with the coaming....I messed up by not remembering to start from the center and sew towards each end ..but ..live and.. try to remember...once one reaches 60..if that is anny excuese...still some slack arround the cockpit.... Oh..a new addition to the gurage.. the wifes new car....just happens to be the color I was going to paint the deck..with a black hull.. 1 Quote
