Ray Frechette Jr Posted July 8, 2011 Report Posted July 8, 2011 My son Joshua graduated from High school this year. Has had difficulty finding work. Been busy doing volunteer stuff... Got called out to do the Schooner Bowdoin summer recruiting trip again this summer and did the volunteer thing on it again. Really iin his element there. This time he went to the Captain and said he "knew " what the Captains job is. His real question is how do I get a paid position on a Schooner? First mate was listening and he has contacts throughout the windjammer fleet in Maine. Josh got a call from the mate yesterday. He has been offered a 1 week job on the Schooner Mary Day paid as relief crew. If the Captain likes what he sees he is in line for a regular position later this summer and into the fall and rehire next spring. http://www.schoonermaryday.com/plan-your-trip/tour-the-schooner/ All the while he can log in his days at sea and work towards getting a Mates license. Needless to say Josh is pretty excited. He gets to get paid to go Schooner sailing! Quote
ricknriver Posted July 8, 2011 Report Posted July 8, 2011 Good for him!! Been suggesting same to Grandson in similar situation but looking to Chef. Encouraging him to volunteer as a galley slave in local restaurants and see if he really wants that environment. Best of luck & safe sailing for Josh! R Quote

Frank Hagan Posted July 9, 2011 Report Posted July 9, 2011 Volunteering is one of the best "networking" methods to snag a job. Good for Josh! He already knows he loves it, so it should be a great experience for him. Quote
