JPower210 Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 Hi all- I recently bought the plans for the CS 17 and am seriously considering getting the kit from Graham to make the building process a bit easier. I recently tried to get together with Ken Potts as he was selling his boat but I fear that we may have missed connecting and I don't know how to get a hold of him. So, before I jump into the building- anyone else out there considering selling their CS 17? Thanks- John Quote

Now that Chief has come down again against carrying boats to the beach, I'm glad I have a lighter boat for next year. That danged Daysailer nearly killed me getting it off the beach. I don't know if I could have got her up the beach by myself. Thinking about the NCC. Timing is bad for me, though. I'll probably have to do some kind of solo camp-cruising in FL for a shakedown instead. Quote

Very happy for you. --Paul (a.k.a. DancesWithSandyBottom) Boat was built by a retired engineer in Georgetown, SC in 2007. It's all occume plywood, aluminum masts, fitted with the high roach battened racing sails. She's built and rigged to plan almost exactly. He bought all the sailing hardware from Graham per the plans. The builder opted for the lower rear deck instead of the deeper lazarette. The only significant devation from the plans was omission of the foredeck hatch. The area under the foredeck is accessible through a plastic hatch in the forward bulkhead. I'm not crazy about this arrangement, however. I may build a hatch at some point. Boat's name is PLUFF MUD. I'm not going to change names unless it's revealed to me through some mystical insight she was improperly named to begin with. She's got oars and a brand new motor. The motor, a 6 HP Tohatsu 4-stroke, is WAAAYYY too big for this boat. I'm looking to trade it for a 2 hp Honda or equivalent. Along with the boat, I got all the plans, a detailed accounting of all the of lumber, hardware, glue, paint, fastener, line, and tool purchased to build the boat along with all the reciepts. He sold it for health reasons, citing his inability to use the boat very much. She's a very nice boat and very lighly used since launching. I'm obviously very excited about this boat and can't wait to get some miles under her keel. Quote

PAR Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Having had a chance to check out a CS-17 with an outboard I can tell you a 6 HP isn't way too big, if you like to go fast. I had a mildly hot rodded 5 HP Mercury on one a couple of summers ago and it was cooking in the high teens, low 20 MPH range. Yes, it was bow up pretty good, but it could be trimmed down with weight or crew location and she was experiencing a bit of a yaw tenancy, suggesting she was "on the verge", but I'm pretty good at keeping them upright. With the rig stowed, rather then up, she'd probably be a much more reassuring ride at these speeds. Though for practical purposes, a 2 HP is more then enough engine, the 5 HP got me and a 170 pound friend up to 18 MPH in calm water. Quote
