Sheesh, I'm away from the list for a month and I get labled a "Seaman Recruit". More like a landlubber, but that's beside the point. :wink: Well,

I guess the month away gave the epoxy puhlenty of time to cure on the hull bottom. Now onward to the sanding.....Hopefully I'll get back to working on the weekender this uh, weekend. I couldn't read the forum with the ancient version of Netscape available to me while on the road. Good to be back folks!

Winter is back in Michigan, bummer, and I was ready to work on the boat this weekend. Now rethinking plans. Humm wonder how much power to heat up a boat.

Yep, I was stuck in the Minneapolis area for training for a month. Jeeze it's cold down there. I made the mistake of going jogging the first morning I was there, lightly frostbit my ears. Cripes, I live in Fairbanks Alaska, I've never been frostbit up here! I'm in Minneapolis for less than 24 hrs. and get it. Freakin' wind down there.

My wife is working under the misconception that this will be the last boat.....delusional she is. I just smile and nod......

I spent a couple of years in Iceland, just a few hundred miles south of the Artic Circle. I recall that the weather in Minnisota was consitently worse than Iceland's.

Yep, Alaska can be mean, and like all places extream, if your not prepared you can pay a price.

But like John said, we have had some nice weather lately, the folks to the east of us, have been having all the fun.

Heck, I don't think I used my snow shovel but a couple of times this year. I am a happy man!

hey Luckettg- When were you in Kef? I was there 62-63. Was in the electronics shop, then assigned radioman on the R&R flights to Germany each weekend. Flew on an old C-54. Navy 50862. Funny how you can remember numbers like that.

Ice storm, power outages, three buildings on fire with in two miles. Boy we went from winter to bettle field and were in the heart of Michigan.

I work at the Benton Harbor, MI, Home Depot part time in the hardware and tools area. Today, we were selling generators like hot cakes and sending them north to the Grand Rapids area due to the ice storm there. My son, who lives in South Bend, IN (about 30 miles south) told me that they are expecting a winter storm watch for Sunday. Brrrrr, and I thought winter was done with us for this spring.

My wife saw something great today. We live in Oxnard, near the Seabee base here, and there was a crowd of people at the corner of one of the main boulevards that defines the edge of the base. They had signs to honk to show support, and people were driving by and honking to encourage the supporters. She was waiting for the left turn light, and honked and gave a thumb's up to the folks on the corner. Then some of the sailors (seabees?) were running just inside the perimeter fence, stopped and spread out, saluted the supporters, fell back into "formation" and went on running. Everyone went crazy clapping and honking.

Too bad there were no news cameras around to capture it.

We could have used one of those generators today. We lost power at about 2:30 in the morning and didn't have power back until 4:30 this afternoon. we had all of the camping stuff out ready for the long haul. I went out to find a coffee pot as that was nowhere to be found. I came up with a new drip coffee maker for use with a colman stove. I will probally end up using it on Sanddragon as it takes no additional power.

We had a house fire two blocks over on Friday night that was started when a limb came down on the power line. That could have happened anywhere around here. We had about 1" of ice here. I parked the cars out in the yard away from the trees as limbs were falling all over the neighborhood. We got lucky and only had a few small branches come down. None of the big limbs fell from our trees.

I know Port Hueneme well...it was home for a while. I was in NMCB40 from 1979 to 1980. We were building the Diego Garcia base and prepping to rescue the hostages in Iran. Oxnard is a really nice place. I left the Navy for family reasons in July 1980, but will always be a sailor and a Seabee at heart. Still have dreams and nightmares, but truly wish I was over in Iraq right now. Too old, too fat, too worn out now. Guess it is time for the new generations to deliver some payback.

Well, they seem to be doing a good job over there. Every time we think the young people are going to hell in a handbasket, we get another view. I think we have yet another generation with the right stuff.

The Seabees volunteered to help with the construction of the new Boys and Girls Club ... which was funny to see. Instead of yellow Catapillar tractors, there was an "assault" on the vacant land, complete with humvees and desert-camo tractors. Good community relations by the base commander.

Was that the Naval Construction Training Center doing the club? The Seabees constantly train and build bogus buildings, etc. We always wanted to build more things in the local communities instead, but did not want to upset the local contractors either. It is a fine line between helping a community and taking food from it's mouth too, so to speak. I am glad they were able to help. I sometimes took my plumbing crews out to the local city at Gulfport, with the city's permission, to rod out some of the main sewer lines. We taught classes at the local community colleges, sponsered and worked with Scouting, have our family homes, local schools, etc. and were very involved with the local communities. It was a great way to both teach how to do the job and help our citizens. I am sure that Seabee's are still doing that, and am glad to hear from you about it. My oldest son first learned to walk while we were at Port Hueneme. My first wife and I honeymooned (sort of) while I was TDY going to school there too. You can bet the Seabees are right there with the Marines in Iraq too. Seabees tend to shun publicity. It gets in the way of getting the job done.
