I just know the boat by reputation, and people love their Compacs.  They make nice looking boats, including their catboats that I drool over.

I can't remember the guy's name, but there was an active poster on the Trailer Sailor BBS that sailed a Compac 16.

they are not light sailers.  The compac that I have been on are heavy boats.  They are also attractive and well made.

Chris is correct and they are also fairly stiff boats too. The hold their value and are well liked by owners. They sail fairly well, but I think they could enjoy some more area. The boat has some clever rigging bits. I also think they look good from 50 feet, but quickly don't after you cross this threshold.

I have a '76. It's certainly solid. I imagine a 14 year old would be a very nice boat. There were several improvements made over mine which addressed the lack of area and affinity to slip sideways in mild winds (rig changes and keel board).

There's an active online community for support and parts are available from Hutchins who remain extremely supportive. It's not going to be a 'seat of the pants' ride.

I really like all of Ted Brewers designs.
